Under 24 Hours: Flames Break Out at Disney World, Magic Kingdom Ride On Fire

Ask Magic Kingdom fans to name the most relaxing ride in the park, and a lot of them will point straight up. High above Tomorrowland, the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover glides along its elevated track, carrying guests on a breezy, slow-moving tour of the land.

The ride has been part of Magic Kingdom since July 1, 1975, when it opened as the WEDway PeopleMover. It took on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority name in 1994, but most fans still just call it the PeopleMover. It weaves past Space Mountain, through Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and beneath the Astro Orbiter, with views you simply can’t get anywhere else in the park.

There are no drops, no loops, and usually no drama. It is the attraction people ride to cool off, rest their feet, or soak up that retro vision of the future.

So when a video surfaced this weekend showing smoke and flames right below the PeopleMover track, it definitely got people talking.

Flames Beneath the Track

The video was shared on Instagram by The Florida Pickers, and it captures a fire breaking out underneath the PeopleMover in Tomorrowland. Smoke rises from the area, and an open flame is clearly visible below the ride’s elevated track.

Cast members can be seen stepping in. In the footage, they escort guests through the underpass beneath the PeopleMover track, guiding them away from the fire. This video was posted 14 hours after the publication of this article.

The cause of the fire is not clear from the video, and we have not seen an official explanation from Disney. It is also not clear exactly what was burning or how long it took for the flames to be put out.

Nobody Told the Crowd to Panic

The part of the video that has fans talking most, though, is the crowd. While cast members move some guests away, plenty of others are standing right around the fire, seemingly unbothered.

That calm reaction struck a chord online. “Someone needs to study how people respond to fires in Disney,” one commenter wrote. They went on to share a story from a meal at ‘Ohana, where the fire alarms went off and “literally no one moved a muscle.” According to the commenter, servers had to walk around and tell people they actually needed to evacuate.

Another simply pointed out the obvious: “People just standing under it 😂”

One fan even had a fire story of their own from a different park. “I was staying at Yacht Club last year when the fire broke out behind France in Epcot. I got great photos from my hotel room.”

Others tried to guess what might have started it. “Maybe from the birds’ nests there? I’ve seen them every time I’ve been there waiting in line,” one person suggested. That is only a theory from a commenter, and nothing official has backed it up.

And of course, someone found the silver lining. “Yikes! If everyone is ok, get a people mover pin for the memory.”

Still Gliding Along

The good news is that the PeopleMover itself does not appear to have been damaged. Nothing in the video suggests the track or ride vehicles were affected, and one commenter who said they were in the park offered a quick update: “Currently here. People Mover is movin along just fine.”

This is not the first time the PeopleMover has made headlines for smoke or fire. On January 2, 2020, smoke poured down the ride’s entrance ramp, and guests were evacuated. The PeopleMover and Astro Orbiter both closed temporarily, then reopened after an inspection by the Reedy Creek Fire Department. No official cause was shared at the time.

In February 2022, fire alarms led to evacuations at Space Mountain, and the PeopleMover closed as well, since its track runs through the building. Firefighters later traced the alarms to a smoking break room refrigerator, and there was no actual fire.

Earlier this year, in June 2026, a viral TikTok also appeared to show flames near the PeopleMover.

As for this latest incident, the key questions remain open. What caused the fire, and was anyone hurt? We have not seen answers from Disney yet.

A Friendly Reminder From Tomorrowland

It’s easy to laugh at the image of guests calmly standing next to a fire like it’s just another Tomorrowland show. Still, it’s worth a quick reminder. If you ever see smoke or flames in the parks, the best move is to listen to cast members and head where they direct you. The photo can wait.

The fact that the PeopleMover appears to have come through unscathed is great news for fans of the classic attraction. For now, it looks like Tomorrowland’s favorite slow ride has survived yet another bit of unexpected excitement.

We’ll keep an eye out for any official word on what caused the fire and update you if we learn more.

Now, be honest with us. If you were standing in Tomorrowland when this happened, would you have moved along, or would you have stuck around like everyone else in that video? And while you’re at it, tell us your best PeopleMover memory in the comments. Bonus points if it involves a weird announcement, a surprise stop, or a perfect view of Space Mountain.
