Walt Disney World

Another Disney World Area Shuts Down as Closure List Stretches Into 2028

Walt Disney World Resort is entering another busy holiday season with several attractions unavailable, hotel renovations underway, and more scheduled closures approaching. Now, a section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom has joined the growing list.

The southern portion of Discovery River Amphitheater has been blocked off ahead of Santa’s Holiday Grove, removing access to part of a waterfront seating area near the park’s Tropical Americas construction project.

The restriction is relatively small compared with other Disney World closures. However, it arrives while Magic Kingdom has two attractions offline, a water park is undergoing refurbishment, and several Disney Resort hotels are preparing for projects extending into 2027 and 2028.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Closes Part of Discovery River Amphitheater

The southern section of Discovery River Amphitheater, across from Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!, was blocked off as of November 5, 2026. Movable planters now restrict access to that side of the waterfront venue, while the northeastern seating area near Expedition Everest remains accessible.

The amphitheater is not currently hosting a regular entertainment offering, but its waterfront seating has provided guests with a place to rest and observe construction across Discovery River. That viewing opportunity is now more limited.

The restriction comes ahead of Santa’s Holiday Grove, a new seasonal offering scheduled for the surrounding area.

According to the Disney Parks Blog’s 2026 holiday announcement, the experience will feature a festive trail with intermittent snow flurries, themed food and beverages, seasonal music, and a visit with Santa Claus.

Disney previously hosted Santa at Restaurantosaurus in DinoLand U.S.A., an area being transformed as part of the Tropical Americas expansion. Inside the Magic has previously covered Santa’s new Animal Kingdom location and the changes surrounding DinoLand U.S.A..

No reopening date has been established for the restricted amphitheater seating. The change is temporary in scope, and the remaining seating area provides an alternative for guests visiting this section of the park.

Two Major Magic Kingdom Attractions Remain Closed

The Animal Kingdom restriction arrives while Magic Kingdom is operating without two familiar attractions.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure closed on November 2, 2026, for routine refurbishment. Disney’s official attraction page lists a reopening expected in December, while the operating schedule and earlier reporting point to December 18 as the anticipated return.

The closure removes the Frontierland water ride from the lineup during much of the holiday season, including Thanksgiving.

Inside the Magic previously reported on the start of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure’s extended refurbishment and the uncertainty surrounding which elements of the attraction will receive attention.

Elsewhere in Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress remains unavailable. The Tomorrowland attraction closed July 6, 2026, for a major reimagining, with Disney expecting it to reopen in late spring 2027.

The project will introduce a revised presentation, including an Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney and changes to the decades featured throughout the show. Inside the Magic has detailed the Carousel of Progress reopening timeline.

These are different projects with different reopening windows. Neither has been announced as a permanent closure.

Disney World Water Park and Resort Entertainment Closures Continue

Guests visiting outside the four main theme parks are also encountering temporary changes.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon remains closed for its seasonal refurbishment. The official Typhoon Lagoon schedule currently lists January 27, 2027, as its reopening date, with Blizzard Beach available in the meantime.

At Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter, Scat Cat’s Club – Lounge closed October 6 for refurbishment. Disney expects the lounge to reopen in January 2027 and has established a temporary bar near Scat Cat’s Club – Café.

These changes are not all equivalent to the closure of a major attraction. A guest planning an evening at Scat Cat’s Club faces a different inconvenience from someone visiting Magic Kingdom specifically to experience Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

Still, they illustrate why guests planning trips should review individual attraction and amenity schedules instead of assuming every location will be available throughout their stay.

Disney Resort Hotel Refurbishments Stretch Into 2028

Several Disney hotels have longer construction timelines, creating additional considerations for families booking vacations well in advance.

Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and BoardWalk Villas will temporarily lose access to Luna Park Pool, Luna Park Crazy Play Area, and Leaping Horse Libations beginning January 11, 2027. The maintenance period is expected to continue through April, although the Inn and Villas leisure pools will remain available.

Disney confirms the closure dates on its BoardWalk Inn resort information page and associated recreation listings.

Guests who selected the hotel for its feature pool may want to review those dates before committing to a reservation. Inside the Magic has also examined the broader collection of Disney World hotel refurbishment projects scheduled for 2027.

Other reported projects include room renovations at Port Orleans Riverside, phased refurbishment work at Animal Kingdom Lodge, and updates planned for Wilderness Lodge.

Some projects reach considerably further into the future. Disney’s Art of Animation Resort has a reported guest room refurbishment schedule running from mid-June 2027 through October 2028. Wilderness Lodge also has a planned Copper Creek Springs Pool refurbishment in early 2028.

These are phased projects, not announcements that the entire hotels will close. Inside the Magic previously examined the extended Art of Animation refurbishment timeline and its possible implications for future hotel guests.

Disney Skyliner Will Stop Operating for One Week in January 2027

One of the most consequential scheduled interruptions will affect transportation rather than a ride or hotel amenity.

The Disney Skyliner will close from January 24 through January 30, 2027, for routine maintenance, according to Disney’s official transportation information.

The gondola network normally connects EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios with Art of Animation, Pop Century, Caribbean Beach, and Riviera resorts.

During the refurbishment, complimentary bus transportation will be available.

Guests staying at Skyliner-connected hotels during that week will need to use alternative transportation rather than the gondolas. The interruption is especially relevant to travelers who selected those accommodations because of their transportation connections to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.

Although the temporary closure is only scheduled for seven calendar days, it affects an entire transportation system rather than an individual attraction.

What Disney World Guests Should Know Before Booking

The growing closure schedule does not mean Walt Disney World is preparing to shut down as a whole. The projects are separate, with different purposes and timelines.

Some involve routine attraction maintenance. Others are hotel renovations, transportation servicing, or preparations for new seasonal offerings.

Their combined effect, however, means guests visiting at different times may encounter substantially different attraction lineups, hotel amenities, and transportation arrangements.

A family visiting Magic Kingdom in November 2026 will face different restrictions from a family staying at BoardWalk Inn in February 2027. Guests booking Wilderness Lodge or Art of Animation for 2028 have another set of renovation schedules to consider.

Before finalizing a vacation, visitors should consult the official attraction calendars, review resort refurbishment notices, and check transportation updates for their exact travel dates.

For guests arriving this November, the most immediate changes include the partial Discovery River Amphitheater restriction, the ongoing closures at Magic Kingdom, and preparations for Disney’s holiday season beginning November 13.

Walt Disney World continues operating throughout these projects, but the list of temporary changes is becoming increasingly important to guests planning both upcoming holidays and vacations years ahead.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
