After Many Decades, Spaceship Earth Ride Shut Down at Disney World

Spaceship Earth came to an unexpected stop thanks to a small accident involving a pair of sunglasses. In an unusual twist, the Disney Park guest involved is telling her story on social media.

Spaceship Earth takes riders through thousands of years of human innovation, starting with early cave paintings and moving all the way into the future. As the vehicles descend backward in the final section, guests are invited to build their own digital future using interactive touchscreens.

It was during this section of the opening day attraction that the guest “broke” the ride. This week, TikTok user Stevie Wilde (@wildeabouttravel_) shared the story on her account, explaining how she accidentally caused Spaceship Earth to stop mid-ride.

“My cousin was lying back because you kind of have to; it tilts you back,” the Walt Disney World Resort guest said. “Her sunglasses were up on her [head] like this, and I knocked them off.”

What happened next was enough to halt the ride entirely.

“They fell into the track and the ride broke down,” Wilde said.

The guest went on to explain that this was her very first time riding a Walt Disney World Resort attraction without her parents, which made the situation even more stressful.

“This was my first time going on a ride in a car separate from my parents, so they kinda freaked out,” she added.

While it’s not unusual for Disney attractions to pause due to technical difficulties, cast members frequently have to stop rides when guests drop items onto or near the track. It’s particularly problematic on newer trackless attractions like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT and Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Make sure to put away those glasses, hats, and cell phones! The guest’s story is a good reminder that even slow-moving rides can suddenly halt when personal items aren’t appropriately secured.

  1. Yes, we had a an unusual time once. We entered the attraction and were seated and began the journey. All was good until we reached top of the journey. A sudden stop, the emergency lights came on and a voice stated, “Remain seated, a caste member will come to assist you to the exit”.
