Disney is moving ahead with several live-action adaptations of its hit animated films, one of which being Moana.

The original animated version of Moana (2016) has remained one of the most-watched films on Disney+, lending to the title character’s latest addition to the theme parks in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Now, as additional details are revealed as to what fans can expect in the new version of the film.

In the initial announcement for the live-action Moana, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced that he would be producing the film under Seven Bucks Productions alongside Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Executive producers for the film include Flynn Picture Co.’s Beau Flynn and Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original film when she was just 14 years old.

Since the film was announced, the project has been met with mixed reactions at best by fans. Some Disney fans who fell in love with the original film were frustrated by how quickly the studio is getting to work producing a live-action remake, especially as Disney has so far largely stayed away from remaking films from the 2000s (the upcoming Lilo & Stitch film being the only other exception so far.)

Other Disney fans expressed varying opinions of the project but still shared that they could be interested if the role of Moana was at least reprised by its original actress, now-22-year-old Auli’i Cravahlo.

With limited information on the film officially shared by Disney so far, fans had been waiting to learn whether or not Cravahlo would indeed be reprising the role. The actress took to Instagram today to share the update that while she is executive producing the film, she looks forward to finding another actress of Pacific descent for the title role.

Cravahlo said:

When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career. In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital that the casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell. So, as an executive producer on the film, I cannot wait to find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength. I am truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent to honor our incredible Pacific peoples, cultures, and communities that helped inspire her story, and I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representation to come.
