More Classic Disney Characters Cancelled

Disney+ has been a roller coaster since its inception. It has seen many successes and failures since it originally debuted in November of 2019.

Among its many successful shows are the Star Wars-based series The Mandalorian and the Marcel Cinematic Universe spinoffs such as Loki.

But it has also had its share of programs that failed to generate an audience and, in some cases, have been wiped clean from the streaming service. Secret Invasion, Willow, and She-Hulk were some of its biggest failures.

The Walt Disney Company has also dabbled in adjusting its pricing structure, discussed plans to combine Hulu and Disney+, and changed its programming.

As reported recently in Variety, Disney+ is making another significant change.

The Muppet series originally debuted on Disney+ in May 2023. The cast of the new Disney series included Lily Singh, Tahj Mowry, Saara Chaudry, and Anders Holm, as well as various Muppet voice actors.

When it originally debuted, the show brought with it many conversations about the future of the Muppets. The comedic Muppet gang grew in popularity in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s due to programs like Sesame StreetThe Muppet Show, and a series of original movies.

In the 2010s, the Muppets made a slight comeback with The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted.

But the classic gang of talking puppets created by Jim Henson has struggled to gain a following lately. Disney+ also attempted to revive the Muppets with Muppets Haunted Mansion in October 2021 and the short-form series Muppets Now in July 2020.

According to the official show description, The Muppets Mayhem series followed “The Electric Mayhem Band — Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Animal on drums, Floyd Pepper on vocals and bass, Janice on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot on saxophone and Lips on trumpet — on an epic, music-filled journey to record their first-ever studio album. With the help of a driven young music executive, Nora (Singh), the old-school Muppet band comes face to face with the current day music scene as they try to finally record their first studio album.”

The Future of the Muppets

Although this is a big disappointment for many of the Muppet fans, it may not be all too surprising. The Walt Disney Company is always looking for ways to cut back, and canceling projects is expected.

The silver lining for the Muppet fans is the recent refresh given to Muppet Vision 3D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. There is also the resurgence of Kermit and Miss Piggy at Jollywood Nights.

But what does the future hold for the Muppets? Who knows. But it likely won’t be focused on The Electric Mayhem Band.

About Steven Wilk

Steven has a complicated relationship with Disney. As a child, he visited Walt Disney World every few years with his family. But he never understood why kids his age (and older) were so scared of Snow White or Alien Encounter. He is a former participant of the Disney College Program (left early…long story), and he also previously worked in Children’s publishing, where he adapted multiple Disney movies and TV shows. He has many controversial opinions about Disney…like having a positive view of Michael Eisner, believing Return of the Jedi is superior to The Empire Strikes Back, and that Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge should have never been built (at least not at Hollywood Studios). Every year for the past two decades, Steven has visited either Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani or went on a Disney Cruise. He’s happy to share any and all knowledge of the Disney destinations (and he likes using parenthesis a lot…as well as ellipses…)
