It’s not the best morning when you see a beloved actor like Dick Van Dyke trending online.

It’s difficult to find another actor who has put a smile onto as many faces as Dick Van Dyke. The soft-shoed charmer has been a household name ever since he starred in Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins (1964) as Bert the chimney sweep, and is still singing and dancing at the age of 97.

But today it has been revealed that Disney Legend Dick Van Dyke suffered minor injuries after his car was involved in a collision in Malibu, California.

The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins star is reported to have lost control of his vehicle in wet weather and hit a gate. Officers were called to the scene on the morning of Wednesday, March 15, where they found that the actor’s silver Lexus had collided with a gate.

According to CNN, a spokesman for the Malibu Police Department confirmed that the 97-year-old actor suffered “minor injuries.” Van Dyk sustained a bloody nose and a possible concussion, but avoided serious injury and was not taken to the hospital.

The spokesman said the fire department had also been notified of the incident but that no further details were available about the actor. The incident happened about a decade after the beloved actor survived a car fire after his Jaguar burst into flames on a Los Angeles freeway.

Last month, Van Dyke became the oldest contestant ever to appear on the Fox singing contest “The Masked Singer.”

Van Dyke gave an impressively energetic performance as “Gnome” on the reality show, leaving judge Nicole Scherzinger in tears. His most recent acting credits include Jim Carrey’s comedy-drama “Kidding” and a rousing cameo in Mary Poppins Returns as Mr. Dawes Sr.

Dick Van Dyke became a Disney Legend in 1998. The actor received the honor alongside 20 others, including Kurt Russell, Virginia Davis, and Roy E. Disney.

The legendary actor has had a multitude of small roles in various Disney productions, including as Goofy’s grandfather, Captain Goof-Beard, on an episode of “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.”

Dick Van Dyke took the stage at Disney’s D23 Expo fan convention in 2019 to reveal the news that a Mary Poppins ride would be coming to EPCOT at Walt Disney World. The attraction is currently postponed, but concept art from the Disney ride was just revealed.

The attraction would be located in the United Kingdom Pavilion of the EPCOT theme park and add an entirely new neighborhood to the British area. In the concept plans, Disney Guests would step in time down Cherry Tree Lane past Admiral Boom’s house, then enter Number 17 – home of the Banks family – where their adventure would begin.

A Disney Imagineer’s artwork shows Disney World Guests spinning around indoors in teacups in an English countryside setting similar to the “Jolly Holiday” sequence from the original Mary Poppins film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.
