A lot is changing at Walt Disney World, with new rides, attractions, and entire lands currently in development. Some of the most exciting projects are located in Magic Kingdom, which is set to receive not just a new area inspired by Pixar’s Cars franchise, but a land dedicated to some of Disney’s most iconic villains.

However, big changes are also happening inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with the park soon to welcome a new land also based on another Pixar franchise, this time Monsters Inc.

Officially titled Monstropolis, this new area will be home to several places to explore, as well as one “E-ticket” thrill ride, a suspended roller coaster.

To say excitement is through the roof for Monstropolis would be an understatement, though fans are still feeling the sting after Muppets Courtyard permanently closed. The Muppets-filled land had become a staple of not just Hollywood Studios but Walt Disney World as a whole, and while it was never as popular as places like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland, Muppets Courtyard was a quintessential piece of Disney World history.

Muppets Courtyard officially closed in June to make way for the park’s upcoming Monstropolis expansion project.

Over the last few months, the now-defunct Muppets Courtyard has been covered with walls and blocked off from guests. The land’s former gift shop has been demolished, as have other sections of the land.

Alongside this shop, Muppets Courtyard was also home to two eateries: the sit-down Italian restaurant Mama Melrose Ristorante Italiano and a fast-food pizza joint named PizzeRizzo.

Recently, Disney painted over the outside portion of Muppet*Vision 3D’s queue, removing all of the Muppet theming.

However, fans should not fret as this is not the end of the Muppets at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. As a sort of consolation prize, Disney revealed that Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Fozzie Bear would take over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, which resides just a few blocks away at the same park.

Legendary real-life rock band Aerosmith has headlined the roller coaster since it opened, though Disney will soon close the thrill ride and give it a Muppets makeover. Exact timelines and dates for any of these projects are yet to be confirmed, but it’s safe to say guests will see a lot of construction inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios over the next few years.

About Luke Dammann

When at Disney world, Luke will probably be found eating with his favorite animatronic, Sonny Eclipse at Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe. When not at Disney World, Luke will probably be found defending Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe to people who claim "there are better restaurants"
