Apparently, there’s little room for women in a film franchise where ‘dead men tell no tales’ if the fate of the recently announced Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff installment is anything to go by.

, the Australian actress who’s given dazzling performances in independent films and summer blockbusters alike, was recently interviewed for Vanity Fair, where she revealed some disheartening news about the Pirates of the Caribbean movie she was set to star in.

In the summer of 2020, Christina Hodson, the screenwriter of Birds of Prey (2020), announced that a new Pirates of the Caribbean film was in the works due to the DC film’s success.
However, two years later, has just revealed that the film has been scrapped, and we have no idea why. In her recent interview with Vanity Fair, she spoke on the film’s cancellation, saying:
We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led-not totally female-led, but just a different kind of -which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.

Like most stories, Pirates of the Caribbean has been very male-dominated, with few female characters. Whether discussing the film series or the classic attractions at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort, the issue of sexism has often been a part of the discussion.

So much so that the attractions have recently undergone updates to change the ‘bridal auction’ scenes into something more lighthearted, with a female pirate leading the new auction.
But despite these feminism-forward updates, there is no female-led Pirates of the Caribbean coming to the big screen.
