For months, Walt Disney World fans noticed something unusual happening on the rooftops of Cinderella Castle. Small sections of paint appeared to bubble and lift, leading to plenty of speculation online. Some guests wondered whether Florida’s relentless heat was to blame, while others believed the castle was simply showing signs of age after its extensive 50th anniversary makeover.

Now, Disney has finally shared the real explanation.

In a newly released installment of its Unscripted video series, Disney Parks confirmed that the bubbling paint wasn’t caused by weather, poor maintenance, or fading materials. Instead, the issue stemmed from an unexpected chemical reaction occurring beneath the surface of the castle’s iconic rooftops.

Disney Explains What Happened

According to Disney, the bubbling developed because zinc screws installed beneath portions of the castle’s roofing chemically reacted over time. That reaction caused corrosion underneath the painted surface, eventually forcing the paint upward and creating the visible bubbles that many guests had spotted during visits to Magic Kingdom.

Rather than simply repainting the affected areas, Disney took a more permanent approach.

Crews removed each corroded screw individually, replaced it with new hardware, and treated the surrounding areas with a rust-inhibiting solution designed to prevent the issue from returning.

The explanation finally answers one of the more talked-about maintenance mysteries surrounding Magic Kingdom over the past year.

From the ground, the bubbling wasn’t always easy to notice, but sharp-eyed Disney fans frequently pointed it out in photos and videos posted across social media. The unusual appearance sparked countless theories before Disney ultimately revealed what had actually happened.

Cinderella Castle Has Seen Constant Work

The timing of Disney’s explanation comes shortly after Cinderella Castle completed another major visual transformation.

During Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebration, the castle adopted a brighter color palette featuring more vibrant pink accents and shimmering gold details. The makeover became one of the defining visual changes of the celebration, with millions of guests posing in front of the updated icon.

With the anniversary festivities now well behind the resort, Disney has gradually restored Cinderella Castle to a look much closer to its traditional appearance.

The brighter pink accents have largely given way to the familiar white, gray, and blue color scheme that many longtime fans associate with the park. While some decorative enhancements remain, the overall appearance once again resembles the classic version that welcomed guests for decades.

The repairs to the castle roof were part of that broader restoration effort, ensuring the park’s centerpiece looks its best for the years ahead.

One Piece of a Much Bigger Magic Kingdom Transformation

Although Cinderella Castle has returned to a more traditional appearance, it represents just one part of a park that is experiencing significant change.

Magic Kingdom is currently undergoing one of its busiest periods of construction and refurbishment in years, with nearly every land seeing some level of work or planning.

Perhaps the biggest changes are happening beyond Frontierland.

The Liberty Square Riverboat, Rivers of America, and Tom Sawyer Island have permanently closed to make way for Piston Peak National Park, an entirely new land inspired by Pixar’s Cars. That project will dramatically reshape the western side of Magic Kingdom before construction eventually shifts toward the long-awaited Disney Villains Land expansion.

Those projects represent one of the largest physical changes in the park’s history, replacing attractions that had been part of Magic Kingdom for decades.

Major Magic Kingdom Attractions Continue to Evolve

Elsewhere around the park, guests are already experiencing completed refurbishments.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has reopened following an extensive overhaul that refreshed the attraction while introducing updated storytelling elements throughout the experience.

Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin has also welcomed guests back after receiving significant upgrades. The refreshed attraction features updated scenes, enhanced targets, improved effects, and gameplay improvements designed to modernize one of Tomorrowland’s most popular family rides.

Disney has continued investing in existing attractions alongside building entirely new experiences, creating a balance between preserving classics and refreshing them for new generations of visitors.

More Construction Still Ahead at the Magic Kingdom

Not every project has wrapped up.

Outside Haunted Mansion, exterior construction remains ongoing as Disney continues improvements around one of Magic Kingdom’s most recognizable attractions. While the ride itself continues operating, guests can still spot work taking place around portions of the surrounding area.

Meanwhile, Tomorrowland is experiencing another major change.

Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress recently closed for what is expected to be one of the attraction’s most substantial updates in decades. Disney has already confirmed that the iconic Sherman Brothers theme song, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” will remain part of the experience, but the show’s timeline will shift forward significantly with entirely refreshed scenes.

The updated attraction is expected to reopen in 2027.

Could Space Mountain Be Next?

While Disney has not officially announced another large-scale refurbishment, many fans continue to speculate that Space Mountain could eventually receive similar treatment.

Rumors have circulated recently suggesting that Tomorrowland’s signature coaster may someday undergo a significant modernization effort. Nothing has been confirmed by Disney, but with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin, and Carousel of Progress all receiving major investments, some guests believe Space Mountain could logically become the next attraction on the list.

For now, though, those discussions remain purely speculation.

Maintaining the Park’s Most Famous Landmark

The newly released Unscripted video offers something Disney fans don’t often get to see: an honest look behind the scenes at how even small maintenance issues receive detailed attention.

What appeared to many guests as nothing more than bubbling paint turned out to be a chemical reaction hidden beneath the surface. Rather than applying a cosmetic fix, Disney replaced every affected screw and treated the underlying material to prevent future corrosion.

It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes maintenance that most guests never notice until something looks different, but it’s essential for preserving the park’s most photographed structure.

As Magic Kingdom continues through one of its biggest periods of transformation—with new lands on the horizon, classic attractions receiving major updates, and additional projects still underway—Cinderella Castle remains the heart of it all.

The latest repair serves as another reminder that even the resort’s most iconic symbol requires constant care, ensuring it continues welcoming guests for generations to come.
