Disney Quietly Schedules Star Tours Shutdown

For decades, one motion-simulator attraction has quietly anchored Disney’s relationship with Star Wars, adapting to new films, characters, and eras without ever replacing its original ride system.

That ability to evolve has kept the attraction relevant through franchise reboots, corporate changes, and shifting guest expectations. Now, one of its international versions is preparing for a short but notable pause.

The closure is limited in scope and duration. Even so, it affects a ride that has long functioned as a connective thread between Disney theme parks and the wider Star Wars universe.

Star Tours’ Long History Inside Disney Parks

Star Tours debuted in 1987 as Disney’s first major collaboration with Lucasfilm. Opening at Disneyland, the attraction used simulator technology to place guests aboard the Starspeeder 3000 on a single flight to Endor.

At the time, the ride featured a fixed storyline. Its technical ambition helped establish motion simulation as a credible storytelling format within Disney parks.

The attraction expanded to additional resorts worldwide and became a consistent Star Wars presence years before Disney acquired Lucasfilm. Its success demonstrated how film franchises could translate into repeatable park experiences.

In 2011, Disney overhauled the ride and relaunched it as Star Tours – The Adventures Continue. The update introduced 3D visuals, digital projection, and a randomized ride system capable of generating dozens of different story combinations.

Rather than rebuilding the attraction, Disney rebuilt its narrative structure. That decision allowed Star Tours to absorb new Star Wars content without frequent closures or major construction.

Characters and locations were added alongside new releases. Figures such as Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega) were incorporated during the sequel trilogy era, keeping the ride aligned with the evolving canon.

This modular approach prevented Star Tours from becoming a static legacy attraction. Instead, it functioned as a flexible platform that could quietly update without fanfare.

Today, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue operates at several Disney parks worldwide. At Disneyland Paris, it anchors the park’s Star Wars presence within Discoveryland rather than a dedicated themed area.

Closure Set at Disneyland Paris

Disney has confirmed that Star Tours – The Adventures Continue at Disneyland Paris will close from March 9, 2026, through April 4, 2026. The company has not provided an official reason for the temporary shutdown.

The timing places the attraction’s return well ahead of May 4, allowing it to reopen before Star Wars Day. Disney has not announced whether the closure will include maintenance, technical updates, or system work.

The short duration suggests routine operational needs rather than a large-scale reimagining of the attraction.

During the closure, guests will still have access to Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain, also located in Discoveryland. Disney describes the ride as an epic mission where guests ā€œblast off and do battle with the evil Empire.ā€

Originally opening in 1995 as Space Mountain: De la Terre Ć  la Lune, the attraction has undergone several transformations. The Star Wars overlay debuted in 2017, replacing the original Jules Verne-inspired theme.

Hyperspace Mountain has faced recurring technical issues over the years, often linked to its aging launch system and complex onboard effects. Those challenges have fueled long-running fan speculation about a potential extended refurbishment.

Disney has never confirmed plans to restore the original Space Mountain theme. For now, Hyperspace Mountain is expected to remain operational throughout Star Tours’ closure.
