Disney+ is facing significant backlash after advertising the new series Dying for Sex on its homepage, leading some parents to cancel their subscriptions. The controversy stems from the fact that the show, which is rated TV-MA, was promoted on a platform that is traditionally seen as family-friendly, leading some to accuse Disney+ of failing to protect young viewers from adult content.
Dying for Sex premiered on April 4, 2025, and stars Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate as two best friends dealing with one’s terminal cancer diagnosis. The series is based on a true story from the Wondery podcast of the same name. After her diagnosis, Molly Kochan left her troubled marriage to explore her sexuality. The show is part of the FX lineup and is available for those subscribed to the Hulu Disney+ bundle but not to standard Disney+ subscribers.
Despite Disney+ providing parental controls that allow users to block adult content and set up profiles with PINs, the show’s promotion on the Disney+ homepage has drawn ire from many parents. Some took to social media to express their outrage, accusing the streaming service of marketing an adult series to children. The most viral post, shared by the right-wing X (formerly Twitter) account @LibsofTikTok, reads:
Received from multiple sources. Disney is reportedly advertising a series called “Dying for Sex” on the front page of their streaming service. One source says their 6-year-old saw it and started asking about it.
I thought this application was supposed to be “family friendly.” What’s going on @DisneyPlus?

Another parent, @ArcherSys, shared their frustration about their young child seeing the advertisement and subsequently canceling their Disney+ subscription:
Was going to watch revenge of the sith…. My 8 year old saw this….. I’m cancelling my @DisneyPlus today. “family friendly” my ass….. I’m having to have a very uncomfortable discussion with my 8 year old son now…..

Others chimed in with their own shock, including @Philly_Craft, who said:
My 11 year old saw it and started asking questions. I couldn’t scroll fast enough for her not to see it. Was just trying to watch something nice with the kids but @DisneyPlusthrew away family entertainment a long time ago.

However, the backlash wasn’t universal. Several social media users defended the streaming service and pointed out that the platform provides parental controls to help screen out adult content. From @DreamLeaf5:
Do they think Disney Plus is all children’s content? There’s literally parental controls.

Some took a harsher stance, like @KillaSZNKam:
I can’t.. people on this app can’t be this slow..
It’s literally as simple as Hulu and Disney+ merging content so you’re not having to switch apps just to see what’s new on Disney/Hulu/ESPN, nothing more. If they wanna bitch and moan, make a kids profile for the kiddos.. or better yet, be a fuckin active parent and pay attention to what media your kid consumes if you wanna avoid them seeing a fucking advertisement 🤷🏻♂️
