Disney has quietly closed one version of Space Mountain.
First introduced in 1975 at Walt Disney World, Space Mountain quickly became a cornerstone attraction. The indoor coaster relied on darkness, sound, and controlled speed to create intensity without visible drops, broadening the definition of a family-friendly thrill ride.
That design proved adaptable. Disney replicated Space Mountain at Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland, modifying track layouts, pacing, and soundtracks to suit each market.
Over time, those variations became more pronounced. Disneyland Paris permanently converted its attraction into Hyperspace Mountain, integrating Star Wars theming full-time. Tokyo Disneyland went further, demolishing its original Space Mountain to make way for a completely new version.
Hong Kong Disneyland chose a less definitive path. Its Space Mountain operated largely as Hyperspace Mountain for several years, effectively presenting the Star Wars overlay as the standard experience rather than a seasonal offering.
That approach divided opinion. Some guests favored the added narrative and familiar characters. Others preferred the original, non-IP format that emphasized speed and atmosphere over story.
Hyperspace Mountain Taken Offline
As of February 24, Hyperspace Mountain is officially closed at Hong Kong Disneyland. Disney has described the shutdown as part of āoperational adjustments,ā with the attraction listed to reopen in late April 2026. No further explanation has been provided.
The language leaves the scope of the work unclear. The closure could involve technical maintenance, system updates, or adjustments to the rideās presentation, though Disney has not confirmed whether any visible changes are planned.
Speculation increased in 2025 when the park removed the X-Wing starfighter previously positioned outside the attraction. The removal occurred without announcement and was interpreted by some regular visitors as a possible signal of shifting priorities.
The Space Mountain closure is not occurring in isolation. Mystic Manor, one of Hong Kong Disneylandās most acclaimed attractions, also closed on February 24. The trackless dark ride is widely regarded as a flagship experience unique to the park. It’s set to reopen on March 9.
Anniversary Programming and Park Context
These changes arrive during Hong Kong Disneylandās 20th-anniversary celebration, āThe Most Magical Party of All,ā which runs through summer 2026. The anniversary has focused on live entertainment and seasonal offerings rather than new ride openings.
The parkās remaining attractions include Iron Man Experience and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle in Tomorrowland, Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars in Grizzly Gulch, and multiple Fantasyland dark rides. Hong Kong Disneyland is also home to Disney’s OG World of Frozen area, which will soon receive a new walking, talking Olaf animatronic.
The anniversary slate is anchored by the Friendtastic parade, featuring 11 floats and character groups spanning Mickey and Friends, Duffy and Friends, and Mirabel and Isabela from Encanto (2021).
Daytime programming also includes Disney Friends Live: Party at the Castle!, staged multiple times daily in front of the Castle of Magical Dreams with music, choreography, and character appearances.
At night, a special anniversary edition of Momentous incorporates expanded projections, drones, and extended visuals along Main Street, U.S.A., reinforcing the parkās emphasis on spectacle-driven entertainment.
