In the world of Disney attractions, few names carry the same weight as Space Mountain. The dark, high-speed roller coaster has thrilled generations of parkgoers with its roaring launch, sharp turns, and deep-space theme. At nearly every Disney resort across the globe, a version of the ride still stands – each one slightly different, each with its own devoted following.
But in one Disney park, the coaster’s identity has become a subject of growing debate. Now, Disney is making changes—but not the ones many fans hoped for.
At this particular Disney park, located in Europe, Space Mountain underwent a dramatic transformation in 2017. The original storyline, inspired by Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon, was replaced by Hyperspace Mountain: a Star Wars–themed thrill ride that launches guests into a rebel battle against the Empire. Since then, the ride has experienced persistent operational issues, fueling speculation that Disney might finally revert the attraction to its original form.
That possibility appeared more likely after fans noticed the ride had closed for refurbishment from June 2 to June 6. But the real reason behind the temporary closure turned out to be much more technical—and far less nostalgic.
Lighting Effects Coming to the Exterior Hyperspace Mountain Launch
As confirmed by DLP Report, Disney is implementing a visual update that will bring color-shifting lighting packages to Hyperspace Mountain. It’s a feature that takes advantage of the unique structure of this version of the ride—unlike others, its launch is visible from outside the mountain itself.
In the context of Discoveryland, the retro-futurist land that houses the ride at Disneyland Paris, the update will likely enhance the atmosphere, particularly at night. Guests standing in the queue or passing nearby will now be able to watch as colored light syncs with each coaster launch—an effect more in line with modern theme park design trends, where visual storytelling doesn’t stop at the ride entrance.
The park isn’t stopping there. According to DLP Report, 30th anniversary merchandise is also in development for Hyperspace Mountain, even though the actual anniversary date passed on June 1. Disney has not commented on the reason for the delay, though fans speculate that more changes or announcements could follow later this month.
A Ride Caught Between Two Identities
The decision to stick with Hyperspace Mountain, despite its aging overlay and intermittent reliability, signals a continued commitment to the Star Wars branding at this Disney park. For those who hoped to see a return of Space Mountain: De la terre à la lune, the latest developments are a clear indication: the original storyline isn’t coming back anytime soon.
This marks the second time in 2025 that the ride has closed for maintenance, following an earlier refurbishment in March. Whether these incremental upgrades are part of a larger plan or simply routine upkeep remains unclear.
Still, with new lighting and a fresh wave of merchandise, Disney seems to be doubling down on Hyperspace Mountain—at least for now. And for fans still hoping for a true return to the past? The wait continues.
