In a move few saw coming, one of Britain’s most talked-about reality shows is heading to Disney+.

The platform, long associated with lightsabers, superheroes, and princesses, is about to add something far spicier to its UK offering: Love Island. For many fans, the idea of the hit dating show streaming alongside The Mandalorian may seem surreal. For Disney, it signals a new chapter in its evolving strategy to stay competitive—and relevant.

It’s the latest turn in Disney’s ongoing effort to adapt its streaming business. Disney+ has faced challenges in recent years—including subscriber losses, shifting audience habits, and mounting competition.

Since launching with a bang in November 2019, Disney+ has had to fight hard to stay competitive. Efforts have included price hikes, tighter bundling of content from ESPN and Hulu, and a crackdown on password sharing. But its newest strategy is something entirely different—and it involves turning to one of the UK’s most headline-grabbing reality franchises.

‘Love Island: All Stars’ Lands on Disney+ UK

Through a new partnership with British broadcaster ITV, Disney+ UK will begin streaming episodes of Love Island: All Stars, along with other British hits like Mr Bates vs The Post Office and A Spy Among Friends. The content will be available at no extra cost to subscribers.

Yes, it’s the original UK version of Love Island—not the U.S. edition. Known for its villa-bound singles, audience voting, and chaotic re-couplings, the British format has proven to be a global phenomenon, regularly dominating headlines and trending across social media during its run.

The deal marks the first time Disney+ has ventured into this kind of cross-platform content sharing with a UK broadcaster. It’s also one of the most unexpected licensing decisions for a company known for its family-friendly branding, Marvel blockbusters, and prestige TV. But times—and strategies—are changing.

A Two-Way Trade Between ITV and Disney+

The arrangement doesn’t just benefit Disney. In return, ITVX will stream the first seasons of several major Disney+ titles, including The Bear, Andor, Only Murders in the Building, and The Kardashians. UK viewers will be able to access the shows for free on ITVX later this month.

ITV has framed the deal as a win for both sides. Kevin Lygo, ITV’s managing director of media and entertainment, called it a “mutually beneficial relationship,” highlighting its ability to help both platforms grow their reach without building everything from scratch.

The collaboration is being promoted as a “Taste of ITVX” and a “Taste of Disney+,” with each platform maintaining control over its own ad sales for the content it licenses. It’s a strategic shift that reflects the growing pressure on global streaming services to expand without shouldering the full burden of original content development.

For Disney, that may be the point. About 30% of Disney+ users globally are now on its ad-supported tier, and that number is growing. Offering buzzy, popular reality TV shows like Love Island could help broaden the platform’s demographic while attracting new subscribers looking for entertainment outside the company’s usual IP-driven catalog.

As streaming strategies continue to evolve, expect more unlikely pairings like this one. For now, though, Love Island has found an unexpected new home—on a platform originally built around princesses, superheroes, and a galaxy far, far away.
