Pirates of the Caribbean remains one of the most enduring attractions at Walt Disney World, and new paperwork suggests the Magic Kingdom classic could soon see some behind-the-scenes attention.
Tucked into the Caribbean Plaza corner of Adventureland, the boat ride has anchored the land since it opened in December 1973, arriving just over two years after the park itself debuted. Its presence was driven largely by guest demand, as visitors familiar with the Disneyland original, which opened in 1967, expected to find a version waiting for them in Florida. More than five decades later, the attraction continues to draw consistent crowds, with its cool, dimly lit queue and leisurely voyage through pirate-ravaged ports making it a reliable favorite during the heat of a Central Florida afternoon.
Now, Disney has filed two construction permits connected to the attraction, pointing to what is likely a round of maintenance work.
What the Permits Cover
Both permits were filed by Disney’s Sourcing & Procurement team with Orange County, and together they span the full footprint of the ride.
The first covers the address associated with the attraction’s facade and queue. That area includes the fortress-style exterior that greets guests in Adventureland, along with the winding, stone-walled queue that leads toward the loading dock.
The second covers the attraction’s show building. This is the structure that houses the ride’s boat flume, Audio-Animatronics figures, and elaborate sets, including the burning town finale and the scenes featuring Captain Jack Sparrow, who joined the attraction in 2006 following the success of the film franchise.
Who Is Doing the Work
Both permits contract Buena Vista Construction Company, Disney’s in-house construction company, to “Provide labor, materials, and/or electrical for construction”.
Buena Vista Construction Company regularly handles projects across Walt Disney World, from routine upkeep to larger enhancements, so its involvement alone does not indicate the scale of what is planned. The permits themselves do not specify a scope of work beyond that general description.
Is a Closure Coming?
As of now, Disney has not announced a closure or refurbishment period for Pirates of the Caribbean.
That does not rule one out. Permits of this kind frequently precede scheduled downtime, and a refurbishment calendar update could follow in the coming weeks. Alternatively, Disney may be planning to complete the work after hours, an approach the company often uses for electrical and maintenance projects at high-traffic attractions to avoid disrupting daytime operations.
Given the ride’s age and its status as one of Adventureland’s headline experiences, periodic maintenance is to be expected. The attraction has undergone notable updates in the past, including the 2018 revision of its auction scene, and it remains a staple for families and longtime fans alike.
For guests with upcoming trips to Magic Kingdom, there is no need to change plans just yet. Pirates of the Caribbean is currently operating as normal, and Disney has not listed it on the official refurbishment schedule.
However, those who consider the attraction a must-do should keep an eye on the Walt Disney World website and the My Disney Experience app in the weeks ahead. If a closure is announced, it would likely come with advance notice, giving guests time to adjust their itineraries. If the work is carried out overnight, visitors may never notice anything changed at all.
