Disney World Guests Evacuated From Iconic Tower of Terror Attraction

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror has been a fixture of Disney’s Hollywood Studios since it opened on July 22, 1994, and in the 32 years since, it has held onto the identity that made it one of Walt Disney World’s most recognizable attractions.

Inspired by Rod Serling’s classic television series, the attraction invites guests into the abandoned Hollywood Tower Hotel, frozen in time since a mysterious incident on Halloween night in 1939. After a library preshow introduces the story of the guests who vanished that night, riders board a service elevator for a series of supernatural encounters and sudden drops.

While much of Hollywood Studios has changed around it, with the arrival of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Tower of Terror still dominates the skyline at the end of Sunset Boulevard.

A Familiar Voice Returns to Imagineering

Recent weeks have brought fresh speculation about the attraction’s future. Mark Silverman, the voice actor who recreated Rod Serling’s narration for the ride, shared on Instagram that he had visited Walt Disney Imagineering’s headquarters in Glendale, California.

When a fan asked whether guests might hear something new from him at Disney, Silverman replied: “Well…. could be.”

His connection to the attraction is significant. Serling died in 1975, nearly two decades before Tower of Terror opened, so Imagineers needed someone who could convincingly recreate his voice. According to Silverman’s previous comments, Serling’s widow, Carol Serling, personally selected him after the audition process. He recorded the narration during a three-hour session in Glendale, and Disney combined his performance with existing footage of Serling to create the library preshow guests still see today.

Refurbishment Work Already Underway

Silverman’s visit comes as the Hollywood Tower Hotel is already undergoing exterior refurbishment. Scaffolding has appeared around parts of the building throughout 2026, with additional scaffolding reported in August and work expanding to the back of the structure in September.

Exterior work of this kind is routine for a building of the attraction’s age and scale, and it doesn’t necessarily signal changes to the ride itself. Still, the timing has drawn the attention of longtime fans.

Disney has changed the Tower of Terror Before

At Disney California Adventure, the original version closed in January 2017 and reopened later that year as Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!

There is currently no evidence that Walt Disney World plans a similar retheme. If anything, Silverman’s potential involvement would suggest any updates would keep the attraction’s Twilight Zone roots intact. It’s also possible his visit relates to a project unconnected to the Florida ride.

Disney has not officially announced any new narration, storyline, or significant changes to Tower of Terror, nor has it provided a timeline for an announcement.

And these refurbishment updates are not the only reasons the Tower of Terror has been in the news recently. On social media, miaamiaa _ shared a lights-on evacuation on Instagram. Although this video was posted on October 19, 2026, the caption indicates the event took place on a previous Disney World trip.

Imagine getting STUCK on Disney World’s Tower of Terror!

What was supposed to be a normal ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios turned into an experience I’ll NEVER forget!

Not only did we get stuck on the Tower of Terror, but we actually got to see how Disney evacuates guests when a ride stops!

From the moment we realized something was wrong to finally getting off, I caught the whole experience on camera!

This happened during a previous Disney trip, but I HAD to bring this video back because WHAT ARE THE ODDS?!

Would you still ride the Tower of Terror after experiencing this?!

In the video, the elevator descends slowly, with guests in full view. The doors then open onto what appears to be a service floor, complete with tools and equipment, and a cast member begins the evacuation process.

Ride evacuations are not uncommon at high-touchpoint theme parks such as the Walt Disney World Resort. From having to exit Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at its highest point to stepping out into the 100-acre wood in The Many Adventures of Winnie-The-Pooh, guests always have a chance at seeing behind the scenes when hopping aboard a theme park attraction.

About Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
