Spotting rare characters is a fun way to immerse yourself deeper into the Disney Parks fandom, though, as you may well be aware, some of the best places to meet little-seen characters come at steep price points.

Guests can meet many of Disney’s most popular characters around the theme parks and Resorts every day, with the likes of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, the Fab Five, Disney Princesses, and plenty of familiar faces from Pixar and Star Wars, easy to find during a trip to Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Beyond a regular day in the Parks, special events like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in the Magic Kingdom or Oogie Boogie Bash in Disneyland, offer Guests the chance to see plenty of unique characters (especially Disney villains) who are not usually seen in the Parks.

For even rarer characters, though, Guests may look toward events like After Hours parties, runDisney races, or this upcoming experience that will feature characters you may not have known were possible to meet in the Parks!

Some of the most unique characters we have ever seen in Disney Parks have appeared at the Disneyland After Dark events. These after-hours events take place throughout the year with various themes, inviting Guests to experience the Park like they never have before. This month’s Disneyland After Dark event is “Throwback Nite,” set to take place on April 18 and 20, 2023.

Disney’s official description of the event reads:

Step back in time to the 50s and 60s to get a taste of Disneyland Park’s classic past when Disneyland After Dark: Throwback Nite returns! Dress in your dapperest attire and commemorate the evening with live music and entertainment, specialty photo ops and visits with some classic Disney Characters from the era.

Disneyland After Dark: Throwback Nite is a great opportunity to channel your favorite vintage styles for an evening out at the Park, and the event will be capped off with a showing of Disney’s Fantasy in the Sky Fireworks. Arguably the best part of any special event at a Disney Park is the characters, though, and the Carousel of Progress is just the beginning of the rare meet and greet experiences Guests can have during this event.

Theme park reporter Scott Gustin confirmed that the event will host Mother and Father from Disney’s Carousel of Progress, the Tomorrowland Space Couple, and Hyacinth Hippo and Mademoiselle Upanova from Fantasia (1940) to name a few.

We’re willing to bet that most Guests have never met these characters before, so this event should make for a memorable night in the Park for sure! For locals to Disneyland specifically, seeing characters from the Carousel of Progress is extra special as the attraction has been closed for almost 50 years.

The Carousel of Progress moved to Disneyland Park after the attraction closed at the 1964-65 New York Worlds Fair. It ran at Disneyland from 1967-1974 when it was replaced by America Sings, which has also since closed. Today, the former site of the Carousel of Progress has been revamped into Star Wars Launch Bay, so the characters appearing at Throwback Nite have been missed in the Park for a long time.

Tickets for Throwback Nite run $129 for the event on April 18, and $145 for April 20, plus tax, and may be purchased online on Disneyland’s official website.
