Disney has doubled down on its confidence in Avengers: Doomsday (2026), reaffirming the Marvel Studios blockbuster’s December 18, 2026, release date while pushing its new bespoke format.

As the next major chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga, Avengers: Doomsday carries enormous expectations. The crossover event is set to unite heroes from across the MCU, including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, who will serve as the franchise’s next central villain before the story continues into Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).

Despite months of speculation that the film could be pushed back due to its ambitious production schedule, Disney has made it clear that those plans have not changed. During its CinemaCon presentation earlier this year, the studio confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday remains on track for its December 18 release, signaling confidence in one of its most important theatrical releases in years.

That date sets up a major box office showdown with Warner Bros.’ Dune: Part Three (2026), which is also scheduled to debut on December 18. The clash has already been nicknamed “Dunesday” by fans, with both films expected to compete for many of the same moviegoers during the lucrative holiday season.

Complicating matters further, Dune: Part Three is expected to occupy a significant number of IMAX screens, potentially limiting the availability of premium formats for Marvel’s latest ensemble epic. Rather than shifting release dates, however, Disney has instead focused on enhancing the theatrical experience.

To coincide with its upcoming slate, Disney introduced Infinity Vision, a new certification program for premium large-format auditoriums. The initiative establishes quality standards for participating theaters, including advanced laser projection, enhanced brightness and color reproduction, and upgraded surround sound systems.

The studio also confirmed that the upcoming re-release of Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Avengers: Doomsday will be the first films presented under the Infinity Vision banner, underscoring Disney’s continued investment in theatrical exhibition. For this upcoming event, Marvel has renamed Endgame as Avengers: Endgame Encore.

While Disney continues to emphasize Avengers: Doomsday as the centerpiece of its Marvel slate, the studio has quietly altered another aspect of its promotional strategy.

During CineEurope 2026 in Barcelona, attendees noticed that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom was no longer the featured character representing Marvel Studios on Disney’s latest promotional banner (per The Direct). Instead, Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, better known as Mister Fantastic, had taken over the prominent position previously occupied by Robert Downey Jr.’s iconic villain.

The shift is particularly notable because Doctor Doom remains the central antagonist of Avengers: Doomsday and one of the biggest selling points for the film. Downey’s surprise return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe—this time portraying Victor Von Doom rather than Tony Stark/Iron Man—has been one of the franchise’s most talked-about developments.

However, the updated artwork may reflect Marvel Studios’ longer-term plans. Reed Richards has increasingly been positioned as one of the MCU’s most important heroes following the introduction of the Fantastic Four in last year’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). As the leader of Marvel’s First Family, Reed is widely expected to become one of the franchise’s defining figures as the Multiverse Saga moves toward its conclusion.

Nothing about the marketing update indicates Doctor Doom’s role has changed. The villain is still expected to headline Avengers: Doomsday as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men seemingly unite against him in what promises to be Marvel Studios’ biggest crossover event since Avengers: Endgame.

Instead, Disney appears to be striking a balance between promoting its next major villain and laying the groundwork for the heroes who will define the MCU beyond Avengers: Doomsday. With the film’s release date firmly locked in and its marketing campaign beginning to evolve, Marvel Studios is making it clear that the road to Secret Wars is already taking shape.

That said, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has been clear that the post-Secret Wars landscape looks more like a reset than a continuation of the Infinity and Multiverse Sagas, with the X-Men at the center. How Pascal’s Reed Richards and the rest of Marvel’s First Family fit into that narrative is still unclear, but it seems that the Fantastic Four are integral components of the franchise’s future.
