Another part of EPCOT’s World Showcase is getting some attention from Disney, and guests will notice some changes while walking through the Canada Pavilion.
Construction walls have appeared throughout portions of the pavilion, blocking several areas that guests would normally be able to access. One of the closures affects an accessible walkway, forcing some visitors to use a different route while Disney completes the work.
The project comes as Disney continues construction and refurbishment work around several World Showcase pavilions. Germany has recently seen work of its own, while Morocco just came through a much more extensive refurbishment.
Now, Canada has new updates for us to report.
Construction Walls Take Over Part of the Canada Pavilion
Guests visiting EPCOT on July 28 encountered several sets of construction walls around the Canada Pavilion.
Disney has not announced exactly what crews are working on behind those walls. However, the work may involve refurbishment of the pavilion’s elaborate rockwork.
That would make sense considering just how much of Canada’s atmosphere depends on its landscaping and scenery.
Unlike some World Showcase pavilions that rely heavily on buildings and architectural details, Canada features waterfalls, gardens, rock formations, trees, and pathways designed to create the feeling of exploring the Canadian landscape.
Maintaining those areas can also become complicated. Some of the plants surrounding the scenic rockwork are real, meaning crews have to account for root systems while completing maintenance.
Whatever Disney is doing, the project is substantial enough to change how guests move through part of the pavilion.
Accessible Walkway Is Currently Closed
The biggest immediate change involves the wheelchair-accessible walkway.
Construction walls have blocked that pathway, meaning guests who normally rely on it will need to follow a temporary alternative route. The walls have also interrupted access to some viewing areas around the pavilion.
Fortunately, Canada Far and Wide remains accessible.
Guests who need the accessible entrance for the pavilion’s 360-degree film experience can currently enter through the attraction’s exit instead.
So, while part of the Canada Pavilion is closed off, the construction has not resulted in a complete shutdown of its main attraction.
Disney also hasn’t provided a timetable for when the affected walkway or viewing areas will reopen.
EPCOT’s World Showcase Is Getting Plenty of Attention
The Canada project is part of a larger stretch of refurbishment and construction work around World Showcase.
Most recently, guests have encountered work around portions of the Germany Pavilion. Meanwhile, Morocco has just come through extensive refurbishment work of its own.
Canada isn’t completely new to construction work, either, as the pavilion has already received some attention. This latest round of walls, however, brings another noticeable change to what guests can access.
That kind of upkeep is particularly important in World Showcase.
These pavilions aren’t simply collections of restaurants, shops, and attractions. Their architecture, landscaping, pathways, fountains, gardens, and smaller decorative elements all contribute to the atmosphere of each country.
As those features age, Disney eventually has to repair, repaint, replace, or restore them. That can sometimes mean construction walls appearing in areas where guests aren’t used to seeing them.
Canada Has Been Part of EPCOT Since Opening Day
The Canada Pavilion has been part of World Showcase since EPCOT opened in 1982.
Its design is immediately recognizable thanks to the towering Hotel du Canada, dramatic rock formations, gardens, waterfalls, and winding pathways that lead guests deeper into the pavilion.
That scenery can also make maintenance more involved than simply repainting the exterior of a building.
If Disney is indeed working on the pavilion’s rockwork, crews may have to carefully navigate landscaping and other surrounding elements while completing repairs. The real plants and their root systems can complicate maintenance around the scenic areas.
That could also help explain why Disney has blocked off multiple sections rather than limiting construction to one small spot.
For guests, though, the most important thing to know is that Canada itself remains open.
What Guests Should Know Before Visiting
For now, visitors should expect construction walls and some restricted access while walking through the Canada Pavilion.
The wheelchair-accessible walkway is unavailable, and some viewing areas have been interrupted by the construction. Guests requiring an accessible route into Canada Far and Wide can use the attraction’s exit as an alternative entrance.
There is currently no confirmed completion date for the project, and Disney has not detailed exactly what is being refurbished behind the walls.
Still, the timing fits with the construction guests have been seeing elsewhere around World Showcase.
Between recent work in Germany, the extensive refurbishment efforts in Morocco, and the latest updates in Canada, Disney continues to put work into maintaining some of EPCOT’s most recognizable themed environments.
For the moment, the Canada Pavilion isn’t completely closed. However, a noticeable portion of it is inaccessible, and guests may have to navigate around construction walls until Disney finishes its latest work in the area.
