Walt Disney World is often considered the most magical place on Earth, a haven where families create lifelong memories and enjoy immersive experiences. However, a growing issue at EPCOT has begun to tarnish the magic for some visitors: irresponsible drinking.
This problem isn’t new, but recent incidents, like a guest disrupting Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros at EPCOT, highlight the need for serious reflection. The combination of alcohol availability and EPCOT’s reputation as a more “adult” park has led to behavior that not only disrupts the Disney experience but also risks creating uncomfortable or even traumatic moments for other guests—especially children.
Let’s dive into the impact of this issue and explore how Disney fans and the The Walt Disney Company can work together to preserve the magic while encouraging responsible enjoyment of EPCOT’s offerings.
EPCOT: More Than an Adult Playground
EPCOT stands out among Disney parks for its focus on global cultures, innovation, and culinary experiences. With attractions like Frozen Ever After, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, and the much-loved character meet-and-greets, it’s clear that EPCOT is designed for guests of all ages.
However, the park’s World Showcase, known for its unique dining and drink options, has inadvertently fostered a perception that EPCOT is an “adult park.” This perception fuels activities like “Drinking Around the World,” where guests consume alcoholic beverages at each pavilion, often resulting in excessive drinking. While many enjoy this experience responsibly, the growing number of viral incidents suggests that not everyone adheres to this approach.
The Impact of Irresponsible Drinking
Disruptions for Families
Imagine visiting EPCOT with your family for the first time. Your children are excited to meet Mickey Mouse or watch Harmonious, only to encounter someone who has clearly overindulged. Witnessing disorderly behavior—yelling, stumbling, or worse—can tarnish the experience for children and leave parents frustrated. Disney works tirelessly to create an immersive and family-friendly environment, and such incidents break the magic.
Safety Concerns
Intoxicated guests not only disrupt attractions but also create potential safety risks. Whether it’s stumbling into restricted areas, as seen on the Gran Fiesta Tour, or aggressive behavior toward other guests or Cast Members, excessive drinking can quickly escalate into dangerous situations.
A Strained Reputation
EPCOT’s growing association with alcohol has also impacted its reputation. For many fans, EPCOT is a celebration of cultural diversity and innovation. When drinking becomes the main attraction, it diminishes the park’s unique identity.
Why Is This Happening?
One contributing factor is the accessibility of alcohol at EPCOT. The World Showcase offers an incredible variety of beverages, from margaritas in Mexico to sake in Japan. While these offerings enhance the cultural experience, the lack of strict enforcement around overindulgence can lead to problems.
Additionally, social media has popularized challenges like “Drinking Around the World,” where groups of guests make a game out of consuming as many drinks as possible. Matching shirts, rowdy behavior, and disregard for other guests often accompany this activity, creating a party atmosphere that feels out of place in a family-friendly park.
Addressing the Problem
1. Encourage Responsible Drinking
Disney already encourages responsible drinking throughout its parks, but it could take additional steps to make this message clearer. Educational signage at kiosks and restaurants, reminders from Cast Members, and marketing campaigns could reinforce the importance of enjoying alcohol responsibly.
2. Enforce Alcohol Policies
While Disney does have rules around alcohol consumption, stricter enforcement could help curb irresponsible behavior. Cast Members and security staff could be more proactive in identifying guests who appear intoxicated and stepping in before issues arise.
3. Create Dedicated Adult Spaces
For guests who wish to enjoy a more adult-focused experience, Disney could expand offerings at Disney Springs or create exclusive events at EPCOT. By providing a clear alternative, Disney could better balance the park’s appeal to both families and adults.
4. Promote Non-Alcoholic Options
EPCOT is famous for its culinary diversity, and non-alcoholic options like mocktails and unique sodas already exist in many pavilions. Promoting these options more prominently could appeal to guests who want to enjoy the flavors of the World Showcase without alcohol.
How Guests Can Help
As Disney fans, we all play a role in preserving the magic. Here are some tips for enjoying EPCOT responsibly:
- Know Your Limits: If you choose to drink, pace yourself and stay hydrated.
- Be Mindful of Others: Remember that families with young children are sharing the space. Disruptive behavior affects their experience.
- Plan Wisely: If your goal is to focus on drinks, consider visiting Disney Springs, which is open later and offers a more adult-oriented atmosphere.
- Lead by Example: Encourage your group to enjoy EPCOT’s offerings without overindulging.
Preserving the Magic
EPCOT is a place of wonder, education, and fun for guests of all ages. By addressing the issue of irresponsible drinking, Disney and its fans can ensure the park remains a welcoming and magical destination. Whether you’re savoring a cocktail in the World Showcase or exploring attractions like Soarin’ Around the World or Spaceship Earth, responsible behavior is key to maintaining the spirit of EPCOT.
As you plan your next visit, remember that enjoying yourself shouldn’t come at the expense of others. EPCOT’s charm lies in its ability to offer something for everyone—let’s keep it that way.

I written about this before. At times I’ve seen lines longer for alcohol than attractions. It is a bit annoying to have drunk people approaching for whatever reason that they do. I’ve seen security walking some drunk persons out of the park. Walt did not want alcohol at the parks, funny how they talk about Walt’s vision so much. Could not keep it in the restaurants. Too much money in it.
I don’t see much security anywhere in the back part of Epcot. Someone was smoking in the bridge leading to Paris no security. I couldn’t find one anywhere. That is more of a problem than the drinking.
Drinking is a hugh problem but no one cares, I would rather have smoking area’s in the park at least they would be in certain places that wouldn’t effect the other guest like drinking does.
