Gina Carano’s career had an undeniably bright future following her Star Wars debut in Season 1 of the hit live-action TV series The Mandalorian, in which she played Cara Dune. However, after the actress was fired by Disney in 2021, she’s since gone on to challenge the company via a wrongful termination lawsuit — a cause she finds “important” in more ways than one.

Gina Carano, who got her start as a professional MMA artist before making the jump to acting, was, at one point, one of the most promising up-and-comers in Hollywood, taking on buzzy roles in Marvel Studios’ Deadpool (2016) and Fast & Furious 6 (2013).

But instead of following in the footsteps of other MMA and WWE stars who successfully made the transition to acting, including Dave Bautista and Dwayne Johnson, Carano’s time in the spotlight was brought to an abrupt end in February 2021 when she was fired by Lucasfilm after some of her social media posts regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of pronouns, and her thoughts on the U.S. Presidential Election went viral.

With accusations of anti-trans rhetoric and her divisive political views being, understandably, not a good look for the House of Mouse, a decision was made to fire Carano from the third season of The Mandalorian. Disney released a statement shortly afterward, claiming that her social media posts “[denigrated] people based on their cultural and religious identities,” calling them “abhorrent and unacceptable.”

This sparked a series of long-winded rants on Carano’s behalf, with many Star Wars fans taking her side on the matter. Given that Cara Dune played a key role in The Mandalorian opposite Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin), Lucasfilm clearly had big plans for the character, as she was set to star in a Disney+ spinoff series titled Rangers of the New Republic, which has since been scrapped.

As of last month, Carano has officially filed a lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm for discrimination and wrongful termination with a bit of help from tech billionaire (and controversial X owner) Elon Musk. And now, she’s opening up on the matter, explaining why her cause is “important” to free speech rights.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Post Millennial, Carano shared her belief that her lawsuit against Disney is important not just for her, but for everyone. The actress explained that her efforts to defend her freedom of speech – no matter how radical one’s political views are – will, if successful, “make it that much harder for it to happen to the next person:”

I’m happy that like, people are going to actually have to dig in and take my situation seriously, and they’re going to have to understand, when they’re looking through all this, what their company was doing. And by looking through that they’re going to have to make adjustments so that it’s gonna make it that much harder for it to happen to the next person. And that’s why what I’m doing is important.

Bizarrely enough, Carano then went on to compare Elon Musk to Bruce Wayne (AKA Batman), praising the Tesla CEO while saying, “A lot of people, billionaires, put their money wherever they put it. But to put your money into defending people that have been done wrong is such a noble cause. It’s like Elon Musk is some kind of Batman.”

While the comparisons between the DC Comics hero and Musk seem to end there, Carano added that Disney’s actions have prevented her from getting any work — even as a voice actress. She spoke on a specific incident in which she tried to get an agent, as she “[thought] anime would be something really fun to get into,” only to be asked about her relationship with Disney.

Carano, who seems to have aspirations of making her mainstream comeback, appears to be distancing herself from her ill-fated film roles with the conservative media company, The Daily Wire, in which she worked closely with divisive political commentator Ben Shapiro. But it seems like Hollywood isn’t exactly welcoming her back with open arms.

To Carano, adding “beep/boop” pronouns to her social media accounts was “the least offensive thing” she could ever do, explaining, “I was like, what is the least offensive thing you could ever do? And it’s like, that is the least offensive thing. And then and then like, you know if there was there’s just so many aggressive like trolls and bots and haters and probably a lot of a lot of misled young people who love to bully people.”

“And so when somebody would say something bad to me I would just ‘beep boop’ at them because I feel like that was basically the cutest thing,” she added. “You see all these other you know, a lot of my male co-stars would go aggressive at these people and say some stuff and I’m like, over here booping people. And I’m the one that gets fired?”

In closing, Carano spoke on Disney and Lucasfilm’s efforts to dismiss the case (they requested an extra 40 days in an attempt to do so), saying, “We all feel pretty confident that this is not something that they’re gonna be able to dismiss.” She then added that she’s “grateful” to be the figurehead of this “anti-woke” movement even if her firing initially “sucked,” claiming:

I just feel like those opportunities wouldn’t have been there had some of us not spoken up and just shook the cage free early on. And so what a cool thing. I mean, it sucked so bad, but it needed to be done. And certain people actually did it. And I was just so I’m so grateful I was one of those people.

So, is this the last we’ll see of Cara Dune, or will Carano be successful in her attempts to force Lucasfilm to re-hire her? It’s hard to say. But from the sounds of it, Disney and Lucasfilm aren’t taking this lawsuit lightly. And neither is Musk, who seems to be making good on his promise to pay legal bills for users who claim they have been discriminated against due to their activity on the platform.

Ultimately, Gina Carano is far from the first person to be “canceled” for her right-wing political stances, and she almost certainly won’t be the last. But only time will tell if her and X Corp’s legal battle with Disney was worth the effort — and all the negative publicity.
