The extremely popular former CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger has officially announced his new job after several years with Disney.

As much as we wanted him to stay, the former Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer, Bob Iger, recently said goodbye to his long-time run with the company at the end of 2021. He was quick to squash rumors of a Disney return as he noted the rumors were “ridiculous.”

Iger was the CEO of The Walt Disney Company from 2005 to 2020, as well as Chairman of the Board and Executive Chairman. He was however brought in by Disney in 1996 well before becoming CEO.

Disney fans pleaded for his return! With the current CEO, Bob Chapek having a not-so-great reputation among Disney fandom, Bob Iger has looked like the golden child. But, sorry, it seems like Iger won’t be returning.

When Tom Brady announced he was retiring and now returning back to the NFL, this tweet from @matthewfdz stuck with us as hopes for Bob Iger’s return are still alive and well!

Nonetheless, Iger has announced he is stepping into a new industry! He took to Twitter to announce, “Thrilled to be joining the @genies Board of Directors to help @akashrnigam and company empower humans to create the “mobile apps of web3”: avatar ecosystems.”

Iger further went on to tweet, “The Web 3.0 version of me…thanks to @genies. I’m learning a ton and looking forward to helping them fulfill their vision.”

So, what exactly is Genies? According to the Genies website, “Genies is an avatar technology company. We believe every human will need an avatar to represent themselves as the lines between the physical and digital worlds become increasingly blurred. Avatars have the power to unlock a more authentic type of human expression, enabling people to be more comfortable with their true selves in the digital world.”

That’s right, Disney’s Robert Iger is headed to the “Metaverse” as Genies is working to develop and sell virtual avatars. According to Wall Street Journal, Iger has taken a board seat with Los Angeles-based Genies Inc. He is also an investor in the business.

Iger becomes one of five directors on the Genies’ board noting, “I was particularly interested in companies that were using technology for disruptive purposes and, where possible, the intersection between technology and creativity.”

The Genies company was developed in 2017 by Akash Nigam, a 29-year-old entrepreneur. The company raised $100 million in funding and currently employs more than 100 people. The company offers tools for making virtual characters, clothing, and accessories backed by nonfungible tokens (also known as “NFTs”). These NFTs are considered to be the next big wave of tech innovation named “Web 3.0” or “Web3”.

Here’s a video clip under the WSJ article of Iger’s avatar:

What are your thoughts? Is Iger the right one for the job? Will he have you joining the Metaverse with an avatar purchase? Only time will tell as he steps into his new position with Genies.
