When guests head out on a Walt Disney World Resort vacation, they expect to meet a bunch of iconic animal characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Stitch, and maybe even Flik from 1998’s A Bug’s Life. But the bug many hope they won’t find is a roach, especially one in their hotel room.

In a recent post on Reddit, one guest showed the moment they went to check out of a Disney World hotel and unplugged their electronics, only for a roach to come out of the plug socket as well. Midnight_doodles shared the video on the Walt Disney World subreddit page:

Was checking out yesterday and I unplugged my watch charger from the wall and a little fella came out of the socket

The footage shows a singular roach crawling over the plug socket and going in and out of the fitting. While the poster does not confirm what hotel the incident occurred in, a glance at the Moana-themed room places them in the Deluxe Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort hotel in the Magic Kingdom area of Disney World—one of the most expensive accommodations on property.

The tropical Florida climate means guests will likely come face to face with a number of animals while on a Disney vacation. From alligators to snakes to lizards and insects, it is natural to see creatures out and about. However, guests likely hope they will not find any of them inside their hotel rooms.

The comments on the poster’s video demanded that the guest alert the cast members at the resort to the problem, with some other replies claiming it is already too late to manage the problem.

ReformedEngineer said:

Tell them immediately. It’s an unavoidable part of Florida, but Disney 100% wants to know to immediately fix the issue and see if it’s a bigger problem. They may/may not offer you some kind of thanks as well.

Another comment from Caderjames also outlined why telling Disney cast members would be a good idea:

Always tell disney they will help. My grandmommy found a bed bug once at art of animation. The let us go into the gift shop and get all the things we would need for our day and they upgraded our room and cleaned and sanitized all our stuff for us and gave us a free stay credit for future use. We probably got at least 1000$ of free merch and a free stay

CharaRen also offered advice:

Eek, at the Poly too…. I know it’s unavoidable in Florida living here but for those prices I’d hope they’d be a little more on it for cleaning. Roach problem usually means musty/moist stuff and food crumbs left behind by previous guests.

Definitely let them know if you didn’t upon checking out so they can get their pest control to properly treat the room. No one wants to check out or check in with a little surprise tagging along in their luggage

The thread was also full of warnings, including one from rdenney88, who stated that the wall would be infested:

German roach. That wall is infested. 100% those dont come out unless thier home is over crowded really.

I_am_the_Brent also made a chilling comment, writing:

That is a German cockroach, that is not a normal bug. They will infest structures fast and cause health problems. Tell them about this and check every bag and item you have. You don’t want these to come home with you.

A third comment, written by Wrong-Neighborhood-2, urged the guest to let the front desk know:

Please let the front desk know or a CM so this can get dispatched to Pest Management as soon as possible.

The thread identified the bug as a German cockroach, which can be particularly unsettling. And they haven’t only been spotted in the Polynesian Resort. One comment explained that a recent stay at Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort led to extra precautions to be taken after the vacation. Tryingtodothisright wrote:

We had an uncountable amount of German roaches at All Star movies last month. They were everywhere. The front desk offered to spray inside the room, but we declined due to having 3 little kids. They gave us a $50 refund. They also gave us a fresh toothbrush when I showed them the photo of a German roach sitting next to it. The headache and time to check all the luggage was worth way more than $50. When we arrived back home, I checked every single bag, piece of clothing, the lining of every baby diaper, etc to ensure we had no hitchhikers. We were very nervous about bringing any into our home. It took at least 6 hours.

It’s Tough to be a Bug! may have closed down at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom theme park, but it’s seemingly not tough to be a bug elsewhere if they can score nights at the pricey Polynesian Resort…

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
