‘Harry Potter’ Series Reveals New Harry, Ron, and Hermione—Goodbye, Daniel, Rupert, Emma

HBO’s long-awaited Harry Potter series has finally cast the young actors who will take on the franchise’s most recognizable roles.

HBO has revealed that Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Alastair Stout will take on Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger. The announcement follows an open casting call that reportedly drew over 30,000 submissions. McLaughlin and Stout are newcomers, while Stanton previously starred as Matilda in the West End stage musical.

The three new actors take over from Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, who played the iconic trio in the eight Harry Potter films between 2001–2011.

HBO’s “Harry Potter” TV series has officially found its Harry, Ron and Hermione. Dominic McLaughlin will play the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton is Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout is Ron Weasley.

This major announcement follows several high-profile additions to the supporting cast.

John Lithgow (Dexter) will step in as Albus Dumbledore and lead a brand-new Hogwarts faculty that includes Paapa Essiedu (Black Mirror) as Severus Snape, Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) as Rubeus Hagrid, and Janet McTeer (Tumbleweeds), Luke Thallon (Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt), and Paul Whitehouse (Harry & Paul) as Minerva McGonagall, Quirinus Quirrell, and Argus Filch, respectively.

The reboot is being led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner, whose credits include Killing Eve and His Dark Materials. Mark Mylod, a veteran of Game of Thrones and Succession, is directing multiple episodes and executive producing. J.K. Rowling is also involved as an executive producer, alongside Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.

Production is slated to begin this summer and the series is expected to premiere on HBO sometime in 2026.
