It’s been just over thirty years since Disney released one of its most iconic animated films of all time, The Lion King. From the moment it premiered in theaters, fans loved the story of Simba, the gorgeous 2D animation, and the Oscar-winning music. Elton John and Tim Rice wrote showstopping numbers, including “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” “Circle of Life,” and “Hakuna Matata.”

The success of The Lion King sparked a number of sequel films, short films, made-for-TV films, and even two animated series. Then, in 2019, Disney took the animated version and turned it into a live-action remake. And while that film was monetarily successful, it was not as popular as the animated version.

Then, on December 20, 2024, the newest live-action film in the hit franchise hit theaters. Mufasa: The Lion King tells the story of how Mufasa went from a lost orphan cub to the King of the Pride Lands. The film explores the complexities of Mufasa’s relationship with his adopted brother, Taka, who will eventually become Scar.

And while it was a prequel film, it also propelled The Lion King story forward, with Rafiki telling Scar and Mufasa’s story to Kiara, Nala and Simba’s daughter. Audiences also learn that Simba and Nala have left the area as they prepare for the birth of their new cub.

From the outset, fans were very critical of a new live-action Lion King film. However, Disney appeared to take criticism of the 2019 film to heart and gave the beloved characters much-needed emotion. And while Mufasa did get off to a slow box office start, it ended up performing pretty well, making more than $700 million.

Earlier this month, Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden teased that Mufasa: The Lion King would be available to stream on Disney+ later this month, and now, we finally know when that day will be!

According to the Disney+ website, Mufasa will be available to stream beginning March 26!

Mufasa is not the only big movie that will drop on Disney+ this month. On March 12, Moana 2 will also launch and be available to stream. The hit sequel film was originally supposed to be a Disney+ original series, but Bob Iger and other Disney execs were so impressed with the footage that they turned the series into a feature-length sequel.
