It’s been eight long years since the last Pirates of the Caribbean film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, hit theaters. In that time, fans have been desperate for a return of the beloved franchise, but Johnny Depp’s personal struggles and well-publicized trial against ex-wife Amber Heard complicated his return as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Depp eventually won millions in a high-profile civil lawsuit against Heard, but Disney and the Fantastic Beasts franchise had already dropped him. The damage was already done.

However, since Depp won his case, there have been rumors that his return to the Pirates franchise was imminent and that a new film was “in the works.” There have also been rumors that other actors were being considered to fill the lead role in a new Pirates film. Those rumors were often met with brutal retaliation from fans, even if they were untrue.

Quite a few of those rumors have been fueled by Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who has been frequently quoted as saying that he wants to work with Depp again, and a script was in the works. Now, it’s Bruckheimer who is again fueling new Pirates rumors.

Speaking at The Wrap’s The Grill 2025 Conference, Bruckheimer told the audience that a script is in the works, and Barbie (2023) star Margot Robbie is still attached “in some way” to Pirates 6.

Bruckheimer said, “We had two scripts at one point, and then one kind of dropped out, and we kind of went with the other one.” He told the audience that Ted Elliott, who penned four the films in the Pirates franchise, is involved in the latest script.

Bruckheimer’s comments did not mention bringing Johnny Depp back into the franchise, leading audiences to assume that he may not be returning as Captain Jack Sparrow. With the Pirates team ditching one of the two scripts, the missing script may have been for Depp.

For now, Pirates fans may have to live with someone else taking on the starring role in the next Pirates of the Caribbeanfilm, and that person could be Margot Robbie.
