If you think Wish (2023) struggled with audience appeal, it doesn’t even come close to one Disney animation that was so disliked, some moviegoers actually demanded their money back.
For over 80 years, Disney has released countless animated classics, starting with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Over the decades, the studio has celebrated many Oscar-winning triumphs, like The Lion King (1994) and Beauty and the Beast (1991), but it has also released its fair share of disasters along the way.
Is This Disney’s Least Popular Movie?
Among Disney’s missteps, one film stands out as particularly reviled: The Jungle Book 2 (2003). The sequel, produced during Disney’s peak sequel production era, was intended to capitalize on the love for the original 1967 classic.
However, instead of building on the charm and creativity of the first film, it recycled the same plot and fell flat with critics and audiences alike, boasting a score of just 19% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite being released in theaters (a rare move for a DisneyToon production), the film’s quality left much to be desired. The animation had a cheap, uninspired look, and the soundtrack was nowhere near as memorable as the original’s.
While the beloved John Goodman (who also voices Sulley in the Monsters, Inc. films and Pacha in The Emperor’s New Groove films) stepped in as the voice of Baloo after original actor Phil Harris sadly passed away in 1995, even that couldn’t save it from harsh reviews.
Cinemaphile slammed it as “a flea market of cheap ploys and meaningless ideas,” while The Arizona Republic quipped that it was Disney “scraping the bottom of the sequel barrel.” In other words, it was pretty hated.
Audience feedback was just as brutal. One disgruntled viewer shared, via The Mirror, “I took my grandchildren to see it and even they thought it was bad. I asked the manager of the theatre for my money back. They refused.”
Thankfully, plans for a third film – which would have involved Baloo and Shere Khan being captured, sold to a Russian circus, and eventually rescued by Mowgli and friends – were scrapped. This sequel would have featured a redemption arc for Shere Khan, but it never saw the light of day.
The project was shelved during the creative overhaul that came with John Lasseter’s arrival as Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios, sparking a new direction for the company’s animated projects.
So, whenever you feel disappointed by one of Disney’s less successful entries, remember: it could always be worse. It could be The Jungle Book 2.
Do you agree that The Jungle Book 2 is the worst Disney film?
