For several years, Disney seemed convinced that the future of Star Wars television would be built around live-action Disney+ shows.
The Mandalorian (2019) helped start that era. Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin became one of the franchise’s biggest modern characters, Grogu became a merchandising phenomenon, and Lucasfilm quickly expanded its streaming universe with more live-action projects.
But six years — and nearly seven years now — after The Mandalorian (2019) first arrived, Lucasfilm’s strategy appears to be changing.
Din Djarin and Grogu moved from television to the big screen with The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), and Lucasfilm has not confirmed a fourth season of the Disney+ series. Meanwhile, one of Star Wars’ biggest animated successes is officially moving forward.
Maul: Shadow Lord has already been confirmed for Season 2 in 2027.
That doesn’t mean Darth Maul is literally replacing Din Djarin in the Star Wars timeline or that Lucasfilm has officially canceled The Mandalorian. Instead, the shift points toward something much bigger: animation could increasingly become the backbone of Star Wars on Disney+ while characters such as Mando make the jump to theaters.
And Lucasfilm’s six-year pattern suggests this strategy didn’t appear overnight.
Maul: Shadow Lord Is Already Coming Back
Lucasfilm isn’t wasting much time continuing one of its newest Star Wars hits.
During Disney’s D23 event in 2026, head writer and executive producer Matt Michnovetz confirmed that Maul: Shadow Lord will return for Season 2 sometime in 2027. Lucasfilm hasn’t announced a specific release date yet.
That’s significant because Season 1 only arrived in 2026.
The series quickly became one of the most well-received Star Wars projects in recent years. Season 2 was already in development, allowing Lucasfilm to move ahead without a lengthy wait between installments.
More importantly, Maul: Shadow Lord isn’t simply another Star Wars series sitting among a crowded Disney+ lineup.
As things currently stand, it is the only officially announced animated Star Wars movie or television project in development beyond 2026.
That puts a lot of attention on Maul heading into 2027.
It also arrives while the future of Disney’s biggest live-action Star Wars streaming success looks much less certain.
What Happened to The Mandalorian?
The Mandalorian (2019) was practically the face of Disney+ when the streaming service launched.
The series introduced audiences to Din Djarin and Grogu and ultimately ran for three seasons. It also helped Lucasfilm establish a connected group of live-action streaming stories.
But the franchise has now moved Mando somewhere else.
Rather than immediately continuing with The Mandalorian Season 4, Lucasfilm developed The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) as a theatrical movie.
That leaves the television show’s future in an unusual position.
Lucasfilm has not officially announced The Mandalorian Season 4, meaning fans don’t currently know whether Pedro Pascal’s Star Wars series will eventually return to Disney+ for another full season.
That distinction matters.
It would be inaccurate to say Lucasfilm has officially replaced or canceled The Mandalorian. Din Djarin and Grogu remain part of the franchise, and their move into theaters demonstrates Lucasfilm still sees major value in the characters.
But Disney+ itself could be heading in another direction.
Instead of depending so heavily on live-action Star Wars television, Lucasfilm appears positioned to keep animation flowing while some of its biggest characters receive theatrical projects.
And this isn’t the first sign.
Star Wars Animation Hasn’t Missed a Year Since 2020
The most interesting part of the Maul: Shadow Lord Season 2 announcement may have less to do with Maul himself and more to do with what his return continues.
Lucasfilm has released at least one season or title from its animated Star Wars slate every calendar year since 2020.
That run began with Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7 in 2020. Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Star Wars: Visions followed in 2021, while Tales of the Jedi arrived in 2022.
The output grew from there.
2023 brought The Bad Batch Season 2, Visions Season 2, and Young Jedi Adventures. In 2024, Lucasfilm released The Bad Batch Season 3, Tales of the Empire, and additional Young Jedi Adventures episodes.
Then came Tales of the Underworld, Visions Season 3, and Young Jedi Adventures Season 3 in 2025.
In 2026, Lucasfilm continued the pattern with Maul: Shadow Lord Season 1 and Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi.
Season 2 of Maul: Shadow Lord will carry that run into 2027.
That means Lucasfilm will have released at least one animated Star Wars title or season for seven consecutive calendar years.
For all the attention surrounding Disney’s live-action Star Wars shows, animation has arguably been the more consistent part of the company’s streaming strategy.
Disney’s Star Wars Strategy Could Be Changing
That’s where the situation becomes particularly interesting.
Disney initially went heavily into live-action Star Wars programming for Disney+. Following the success of The Mandalorian (2019), viewers received projects including The Book of Boba Fett (2021), Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), Andor(2022), Ahsoka (2023), The Acolyte (2024), and Skeleton Crew (2024).
That created a period when Disney+ felt like the primary home for major new Star Wars stories.
Now, theatrical releases are becoming a bigger part of the conversation again.
The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) moved a story born on Disney+ onto movie screens rather than simply continuing it with another television season. At the same time, Lucasfilm’s animated operation continues producing new stories for streaming.
That could provide Disney with a useful division.
Major live-action Star Wars characters can potentially support theatrical releases, while animation gives Disney+ a steady stream of franchise content.
It is too early to say this represents Lucasfilm’s permanent strategy. More live-action Disney+ shows could certainly be announced, and another season of The Mandalorian remains possible unless Lucasfilm says otherwise.
Still, the contrast is difficult to miss.
Mando went to theaters.
Maul is staying on Disney+.
And Maul already has another season coming.
Maul Could Become Disney+’s Next Major Star Wars Character
Darth Maul is also uniquely suited for this role.
The character has existed for decades, but animation did much of the work transforming him beyond his relatively limited appearance in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999).
Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels expanded Maul’s story considerably, turning him into a character with years of history beyond his theatrical introduction.
Maul: Shadow Lord gives Lucasfilm another opportunity to build around that popularity.
The success of Season 1 also gives Disney something it wants from any streaming property: a reason for viewers to come back.
Instead of launching another completely new live-action Star Wars series and hoping audiences embrace a fresh cast of characters, Lucasfilm can continue a story centered around one of the franchise’s most recognizable villains.
If Season 2 maintains that momentum, it could make Maul: Shadow Lord one of the most important Star Wars projects on Disney+.
Other animated possibilities remain open as well. Lucasfilm could eventually continue its Tales anthology format, produce another Visions installment, or build further upon The Ninth Jedi. None of those projects has been confirmed for 2027, however.
For now, Maul has the stage.
The Mandalorian Isn’t Gone, but Disney+ May Have Its Successor
Calling Maul: Shadow Lord the replacement for The Mandalorian requires an important distinction.
Pedro Pascal hasn’t been replaced as Din Djarin. Lucasfilm hasn’t announced that Maul is taking Mando’s place narratively. And there is no confirmation that The Mandalorian will never receive another season.
What has changed is where Lucasfilm appears to be placing its bets.
Six years after The Mandalorian (2019) helped turn live-action Star Wars television into one of Disney+’s biggest attractions, Din Djarin and Grogu have moved into theaters.
Animation, meanwhile, hasn’t stopped.
Lucasfilm has delivered animated Star Wars content every year since 2020, and Maul: Shadow Lord Season 2 guarantees that streak will reach seven consecutive years in 2027.
That makes Maul’s renewal about more than another season.
Disney spent the early years of Disney+ building Star Wars around ambitious live-action television. Now, the franchise could be settling into a different model, with theatrical movies handling some of its biggest live-action characters while animation maintains a consistent presence at home.
For the moment, nobody knows whether The Mandalorian Season 4 will eventually happen.
But Lucasfilm already knows what Star Wars fans will be watching on Disney+ in 2027.
