Lucasfilm Reportedly Developing Solo ‘Darth Vader’ Movie for Hayden Christensen 49 Years Later

Hayden Christensen’s return to the Star Wars universe may be far from finished.

Nearly five decades after audiences first met one of cinema’s most famous villains, a new rumor suggests Lucasfilm could be considering something Star Wars has never delivered on the big screen: a standalone Darth Vader / Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) movie.

The reported project remains unconfirmed, and the original claim raises major concerns. Still, the idea has quickly gained attention among fans, especially with Christensen already set to return for another major Star Wars project.

And if Lucasfilm really wants to move forward, the timing could hardly be more fitting.

A Darth Vader Movie Is Reportedly Being Discussed

According to a rumor circulating online, Christensen could be nearing a multi-project agreement with Disney and Lucasfilm.

The most notable part of that claim involves a possible standalone Darth Vader movie centered on Christensen.

The rumor originally surfaced through a Star Wars fan page on Facebook before spreading across social media. Star Wars Theory, a popular YouTube channel with more than 3 million subscribers, subsequently discussed the report.

That does not make the movie official.

The potential project has since been reported and discussed by numerous outlets, though Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to make anything official.

For now, fans should treat the report strictly as a rumor.

Still, the reported story itself could fill a major gap in the Star Wars timeline.

The Movie Could Explore Vader’s Early Imperial Years

The rumored movie would reportedly take place after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005) and before Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977).

That period provides plenty of room for a Vader-focused story.

After Anakin fell to the dark side and suffered devastating injuries on Mustafar, he emerged from Revenge of the Sith(2005) physically transformed into the Darth Vader audiences originally met in 1977.

A standalone movie could explore his adjustment to that new existence while showing his early years serving Emperor Palpatine / Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid) and hunting Jedi who survived Order 66.

Star Wars has explored pieces of this era elsewhere, but a feature film could put Christensen’s Vader directly at the center of the story.

Christensen has previously made it clear that the idea interests him, too.

Hayden Christensen Has Already Talked About More Vader

Christensen returned to Star Wars in Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2022, giving audiences another look at both Anakin and Vader.

The actor has discussed how much storytelling potential remains during the period following Revenge of the Sith (2005).

Christensen has previously said there is still more of Darth Vader’s story to explore. During a 2022 interview with ET Canada, he expressed a strong interest in continuing his journey with the character and said he would be open to leading a potential Vader spinoff.

And Lucasfilm already has more plans for him.

Christensen is confirmed to return as Anakin in Season 2 of Ahsoka, which is expected to arrive on Disney+ on January 20, 2027.

There have also been separate rumors from insider Daniel Richtman suggesting Christensen could appear in at least two additional Star Wars projects beyond Ahsoka Season 2. Those projects have not been identified or officially announced.

That makes the new Vader rumor particularly interesting heading into 2027.

Star Wars Is Approaching Its 50th Anniversary

The original Star Wars arrived in theaters in 1977, meaning the franchise will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027.

Lucasfilm already has major plans surrounding the milestone.

A New Hope (1977) is returning to theaters in February, while Star Wars: Starfighter (2027) is scheduled to open May 28, just days after the franchise’s official 50th anniversary.

Star Wars Celebration will also take place in Los Angeles from April 1 through April 4, 2027.

Christensen is already scheduled to appear at the event alongside Ian McDiarmid and Anthony Daniels, making Celebration an obvious place for Lucasfilm to reveal future projects involving Anakin or Vader.

Of course, there is currently no guarantee that the announcement will happen.

But fans won’t have to wonder whether Christensen himself wants another opportunity.

A Vader Movie Would Need More Than Familiar Faces

Star Wars Theory argued that a Christensen-led Vader movie could appeal to several generations of Star Wars fans, from audiences who grew up with the original trilogy to those who embraced Christensen through the prequels.

But simply putting Vader back on screen would not guarantee success.

The story would need to offer audiences more than another series of battles against surviving Jedi.

One possible direction would involve focusing more heavily on Vader himself — his physical limitations, anger, regret, relationship with Palpatine, and transformation from the broken Anakin seen at the end of Revenge of the Sith (2005) into the terrifying Imperial enforcer of A New Hope (1977).

That could allow Lucasfilm to expand an established era without rewriting the events audiences already know.

And after Christensen’s recent Star Wars comeback, Lucasfilm has an actor who has openly expressed interest in exploring that chapter.

Darth Vader’s Star Wars Story May Not Be Finished

For now, there is an important distinction between what fans want and what Lucasfilm has actually announced.

A solo Darth Vader movie starring Hayden Christensen is only a rumor. Disney and Lucasfilm have not confirmed that the film is in development, and there is no announced director, release date, production schedule, or official story.

Still, several pieces are already in place.

Christensen is back in the franchise; he has expressed interest in playing Vader again, and Star Wars is preparing to celebrate 50 years since A New Hope (1977) introduced the character to movie audiences.
