Magic Kingdom Drops Sudden Update for Attraction After Five Decades

For decades, its tune has echoed through Disney theme parks around the world, drawing guests of all ages into a rotating cast of singing dolls, colorful sets, and a message of unity. But despite its enduring appeal, not all versions of “it’s a small world” have aged equally — and Walt Disney World’s is often cited as one that needed attention.

First introduced at the 1964 World’s Fair before becoming a Disney Parks staple, the attraction is considered one of the company’s most recognizable. It has long featured a repetitive but iconic theme song by the Sherman Brothers, recently updated with a new verse honoring the late Richard Sherman. With an art direction inspired by Mary Blair and a show building filled with whimsical animatronics, the ride has remained mostly unchanged for decades.

Still, Disney fans have not always welcomed updates. In recent years, character cameos — including Moana, Lilo and Stitch, and Peter Pan — have been added to some versions of the ride. At Tokyo Disneyland, a temporary “it’s a small world with Groot” overlay brought Marvel characters into the attraction, prompting backlash from purists despite the stylized presentation.

“it’s a small world” Update

Now, after nearly 54 years in operation, Walt Disney World has made a notable change to its version of “it’s a small world.” The park has quietly introduced four brand-new boats at the Magic Kingdom attraction, replacing aging models that had become increasingly worn and unreliable.

The original boats were often prone to scuffs, cracks, and slow dispatch times, with visible damage caused by frequent bumps during loading. The updated boats come in four bold colors — green, blue, purple, and red — and bring a much-needed refresh to an attraction that had shown its age.

While minor compared to the large-scale expansions elsewhere in the park, the upgrade addresses ongoing concerns from guests who have criticized the Walt Disney World version for being the weakest of the existing iterations. Although the show scenes are largely consistent with other parks, the exterior remains a point of contention, lacking the ornate facades found in Disneyland, Paris, Tokyo, and Hong Kong.

More Updates On The Way

“it’s a small world” isn’t the only Magic Kingdom attraction receiving attention. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is expected to close later this month for a refurbishment. When it reopens, it will include handheld blasters — something fans have requested for years — and a new character named Buddy, designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios.

Buddy is expected to serve as a key player in the attraction’s updated storyline, helping guests battle Emperor Zurg as part of the Star Command team. Disney has not announced an official reopening date, but the overhaul is part of a broader push to modernize classic rides while keeping them familiar to longtime visitors.

The park is also set to welcome bigger changes in the form of Cars Land and a Disney Villains area replacing Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America in the coming years.
