Refurbishment scrim appeared on the Town Square Theatre at Magic Kingdom Park this week as Walt Disney World Resort finally addresses years of visible deterioration on the Main Street building.
On February 18, WDWNT reported that Disney cast members had covered a small rooftop window where several tile panels had been missing for years. White scrim also appeared on the right-side porch railing, signaling plans to repaint or refurbish that section of the building. The outlet shared this image on Facebook:
Photos show roof tiles missing for several years before Walt Disney World Resort installed scrim over the area.
Visible Maintenance Finally Addressed
The exterior work suggests Walt Disney World Resort is tackling deferred maintenance on the building that houses the Magician Mickey Mouse meet-and-greet. Located immediately right of the Magic Kingdom Park entrance, Town Square Theatre also contains a gift shop, restrooms, and the Tony’s Town Square Restaurant waiting area.
Whether the scrim installation will expand to cover additional building sections remains unknown. The current work appears limited to specific problem areas rather than comprehensive renovation.
Broadway Theatre Plans Abandoned
Walt Disney World Resort announced at D23 Expo 2017 that a new Main Street Theatre, inspired by Kansas City’s Willis Wood Theatre, would replace the Town Square Theatre, bringing Broadway-style entertainment to the Magic Kingdom. Groundbreaking began after the announcement, but the project was quietly canceled in 2018. Disney never mentioned the plans again after the COVID-19 pandemic.
No Operational Impact
Walt Disney World Resort has not publicly acknowledged the ongoing work. The Mickey Mouse meet-and-greet, Tony’s Town Square Restaurant, and all other facilities in the building continue operating without interruption.
