X-Men star Ian McKellen just dropped a huge bombshell about Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel Studios typically keeps plot details under strict control. Cast members often avoid specifics during press, and major reveals are saved for carefully timed marketing beats.
That context made the comment stand out almost immediately.
Marvel’s Next Ensemble Takes Shape
Doomsday is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s largest crossover films in years.
The project is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, and arrives during a broader reset for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has seen shifting storylines and several high-profile exits.
Anthony Russo and Joe Russo return to direct for the first time since Avengers: Endgame (2019), signaling a return to the large-scale structure that defined the franchise’s earlier peak.
Earlier plans centered on Kang were abandoned following legal issues involving Jonathan Majors. The studio pivoted to a different villain.
Doctor Doom will instead anchor the story, played by Robert Downey Jr., marking a notable shift after his long tenure as Iron Man.
A livestream in 2025 confirmed an expansive cast list, including Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Tom Hiddleston, and Chris Hemsworth.
Marvel is also incorporating characters from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men era, folding legacy actors into its current multiverse plans.
A Slip During an Interview
McKellen is among those returning, reprising Magneto for the first time since X-Men: Days of Future Past.
During an interview with Jake Hamilton on his YouTube channel Jake’s Takes, he appeared to reference a moment from production.
He said he “destroyed New Jersey the other day,” then quickly added, “I perhaps shouldn’t have said that.”
Hamilton did not press for details, and the conversation moved on.
Marvel has not commented on the remark.
The line nonetheless drew attention online, largely because such specifics rarely surface outside official promotions.
New Jersey has featured in recent Marvel projects. Ms. Marvel takes place there, and WandaVision is set in the fictional town of Westview.
Whether the comment reflects a specific set piece or was simply shorthand for filming remains unclear.
