Marvel fans may not have seen the Guardians of the Galaxy together on screen in quite some time, but it looks like the franchise isn’t finished with some of its most popular heroes just yet.
Recent developments from both Marvel and Disney have confirmed that three major Guardians characters still have a future ahead of them. While details vary from character to character, the message is clear: Rocket, Groot, and Star-Lord aren’t disappearing anytime soon.
As Marvel Studios continues building toward its next era of storytelling, these returning heroes could help bridge the gap between the end of the Guardians saga and whatever comes next for the MCU’s cosmic side.
Where Did Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Leave the Team?
When Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) arrived, many fans expected the worst. After years of adventures across the galaxy, there was widespread speculation that several members of the team might not survive their final outing under director James Gunn.
Instead, Marvel took a different approach.
The film ended with every major member of the Guardians surviving. Rather than ending their stories through tragedy, Marvel allowed the team to move forward into new chapters of their lives.
Peter Quill returned to Earth and reconnected with his family. Drax and Nebula remained on Knowhere to help build a new future for its residents. Mantis chose to begin her own journey, while Gamora continued her life with the Ravagers.
Meanwhile, Rocket Raccoon stepped into a leadership role and assembled a new version of the Guardians of the Galaxy. The franchise’s future remained open-ended, even as the original team went their separate ways.

Rocket and Groot Are Officially Returning
While Marvel Studios has remained quiet about when the Guardians could return to live-action projects, two of the franchise’s most recognizable characters have already secured their next appearance.
Disney+ recently reintroduced Rocket and Groot through new animated shorts connected to Meet Spidey and His Amazing Friends. The shorts serve as an introduction for younger audiences before the characters make larger appearances in the Disney Jr. series.
The upcoming “Rescue-Webs” storyline will bring Rocket and Groot together with Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Gwen Stacy. Season 5 of the series is scheduled to premiere on July 13, giving fans their first chance in years to see the duo in brand-new adventures.
These versions of Rocket and Groot are designed for younger viewers and exist separately from the MCU versions fans know from the films. Even so, their return shows that Marvel continues to see the pair as important characters within its larger storytelling universe.
For younger audiences in particular, the appearances provide another opportunity to become familiar with two heroes who helped define Marvel’s cosmic era.

The Promise Marvel Made About Star-Lord
While Rocket and Groot already have confirmed upcoming appearances, Star-Lord’s future remains one of Marvel’s most intriguing unanswered questions.
At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Marvel included a simple but powerful message during the film’s closing moments: “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return.”
That brief statement immediately sparked speculation about where Chris Pratt’s character might appear next. Whether through another team-up, a solo project, or a larger crossover event, Marvel made it clear that Peter Quill’s story was not over.
Years later, that promise continues to loom over the MCU.
Even though Marvel has not officially announced Star-Lord’s next appearance, the studio has never withdrawn that commitment. As a result, fans continue watching closely for clues about where he might fit into future plans.

Chris Pratt Still Expects Star-Lord’s Return
For a while, some fans started wondering if Marvel had quietly moved on from Star-Lord altogether.
After all, several years have passed since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 concluded Peter Quill’s latest chapter. The MCU has shifted its attention toward Multiverse storylines, new heroes, and major crossover events.
However, Chris Pratt recently offered reassurance that Star-Lord’s return remains on the table.
According to Pratt, the character’s comeback will happen at some point, reinforcing the idea that Marvel has not forgotten the promise made at the end of the film.
That doesn’t necessarily mean fans should expect him to appear in every upcoming Avengers project. In fact, many observers believe Star-Lord could sit out major portions of the Multiverse Saga while Marvel focuses on other storylines.

What Could the Future Hold for the Guardians?
Looking beyond the current saga, the Guardians may still have an important role to play.
Some speculation points toward Marvel placing a greater emphasis on cosmic stories after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). If that happens, Rocket’s new Guardians team could become a natural part of those adventures.
A direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 seems unlikely without James Gunn overseeing the franchise, but that doesn’t mean the characters are finished. Marvel has plenty of opportunities to use the New Guardians roster in future films, Disney+ projects, or crossover events.
At the same time, the studio is preparing to introduce major new players, including the X-Men, which could shift attention away from some established franchises.
Even so, Marvel’s cosmic corner remains full of possibilities.

Marvel Isn’t Finished With The Guardians Yet
The Guardians of the Galaxy may no longer operate as the same family fans followed for nearly a decade, but Marvel has made it clear that their stories aren’t over.
Rocket and Groot already have confirmed appearances on Disney+, while Star-Lord continues to carry an official promise of a future return. Whether those paths eventually lead back to another team-up remains unknown, but fans now have confirmation that three of the franchise’s most beloved heroes still have a place in Marvel’s future.
The next chapter of the MCU may look very different from the one that made the Guardians household names, but Rocket, Groot, and Star-Lord appear ready to remain part of the journey.
