Marvel Studios may have finally found the actor to lead its next generation of heroes.

After years of speculation, rumors, and fan campaigns, Pedro Pascal officially stepped into the role of Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), introducing Marvel’s First Family to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and helping usher in what could be the franchise’s most important new chapter since Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Pedro Pascal Finally Joined the MCU in 2025
Few Marvel characters have generated as much casting discussion as Reed Richards.

For years, fans debated who should play the genius scientist and leader of the Fantastic Four, with names ranging from John Krasinski to countless other fan-favorite actors. While Krasinski briefly appeared as a variant of Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Marvel Studios ultimately looked elsewhere when it came time to cast the franchise’s long-term version of the character.
That search ended with Pedro Pascal. Already known for his work in The Mandalorian, The Last of Us, and Game of Thrones, Pascal entered the MCU carrying considerable expectations. Marvel clearly believes the actor has the range necessary to portray Reed’s brilliance while also serving as the emotional anchor of a franchise expected to shape the MCU’s future.

Alongside Pascal, The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduced Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/Thing. The retro-futuristic adventure gave audiences a fresh take on Marvel’s First Family, presenting a largely self-contained story that didn’t require viewers to have extensive knowledge of previous MCU films and Disney+ series.
Marvel entered 2025 facing significant pressure. While the MCU remains one of Hollywood’s most successful franchises, recent years have produced mixed results at both the box office and among critics. Projects such as Captain America: Brave New World (2025) and Thunderbolts* (2025) generated varying levels of success, leaving many wondering whether Marvel could regain the momentum that defined the Infinity Saga era.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps quickly became one of the studio’s strongest performers. The film opened above expectations and delivered one of Marvel’s biggest launches in recent memory, outperforming several previous MCU releases and drawing favorable comparisons to other major superhero films released during the same period.
Many analysts credited the movie’s success to its accessibility. Unlike several recent MCU projects that relied heavily on interconnected storytelling, The Fantastic Four: First Steps largely stood on its own, making it easier for casual audiences to jump aboard.

New Actor Cast as Mister Fantastic at Marvel
Marvel’s First Family is making another appearance in Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends, with Mario Lopez officially cast as the voice of Reed Richards, AKA Mister Fantastic, in the Disney Jr. series’ new shorts.
According to Marvel, per The Direct, Lopez’s version of the character is “the leader of the Fantastic Four” who “uses his ingeniousness and stretching powers to tactfully help Team Spidey beat the baddies.”

The casting brings another interpretation of Reed Richards to screens, though this version is designed with younger audiences in mind. While Mister Fantastic is often portrayed as one of Marvel’s most brilliant and complex heroes, Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends focuses on the more playful side of the character, using his famous stretching abilities to help Team Spidey tackle their latest adventures.
The addition continues the series’ trend of introducing iconic Marvel heroes to a new generation of fans, as the Fantastic Four’s profile continues to grow across the wider Marvel franchise.

Reed Richards’ Future Is Just Beginning
Of course, Marvel’s long-term focus remains squarely on Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four.
The team is expected to play a major role in upcoming crossover events, including Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). With Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) gone and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) no longer serving as the face of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, many fans believe Reed Richards could emerge as the MCU’s next central leader.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has already indicated that major changes are coming to the franchise following the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga.

Recent comments from Feige suggest Marvel is looking toward a form of “reset” after Secret Wars, though the executive has avoided describing the strategy as a complete reboot. Instead, the studio appears focused on streamlining its storytelling while laying the groundwork for future franchises.
Rather than labeling Marvel’s future plans a “reboot,” Feige indicated that Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) will act as a turning point for the franchise ahead of the long-awaited introduction of the X-Men. Speaking with Variety, Feige explained, “Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline–we’re thinking along those lines […] X-Men is where that will happen next.”

Feige’s comments align with remarks previously made by Joe and Anthony Russo, the filmmakers behind Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame. Earlier this year, the brothers suggested that while Endgame served as the culmination of Marvel’s first major saga, Doomsday and Secret Wars are being positioned as the launchpad for the MCU’s next era.
One of the biggest changes involves Marvel’s shift away from Kang the Conqueror as the saga’s primary antagonist. The spotlight has now turned toward Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.), a character expected to become a dominant force in the years ahead.
At the same time, the MCU continues moving toward the long-awaited arrival of the X-Men, while the next Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), is set for a late July release.

For Marvel, The Fantastic Four: First Steps was never intended to be just another superhero movie. The film serves as an introduction to characters who could define the MCU’s next decade. Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards sits at the center of those plans, and if Marvel’s recent success is any indication, audiences appear ready to follow him into whatever comes next.
