Marvel Reveals New Wolverine Actor Following X-Men Cast Announcement, Hugh Jackman Replaced

Marvel Studios has finally begun assembling its new team of mutants, with several major characters now officially cast for the new Marvel Cinematic Universe X-Men reboot.

One of the biggest reveals came this summer, when Stranger Things star Sadie Sink was revealed to be the X-Men mutant Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) after months of speculation. Her appearance has officially marked the beginning of the MCU’s new X-Men era.

The New X-Men Cast

Following that reveal, Marvel confirmed two more additions to the cast in the upcoming X-Men reboot, with Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) taking on the role of Emma Frost and Kit Connor (Heartstopper) playing Scott Summers/Cyclops.

Then, at D23, the studio confirmed four more actors: Christopher Abbott (Girls) as Professor Charles Xavier/Professor X, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, Broadway star Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Ororo Munroe/Storm, and Adam Driver (The Force Awakens) as Nathaniel Milbury/Mr. Sinister.

Whether any of these new X-Men cast members will appear in the upcoming crossover film Avengers: Doomsday (2026), however, remains to be seen. Another major question revolves around Wolverine, as a new actor has not been announced — at least not for the theatrical side of things.

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Appearances

After debuting in 2000’s X-Men, Hugh Jackman reprised the role numerous times throughout the long-running Fox film series and the Wolverine solo trilogy. Most recently, he returned alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson/Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).

Jackman recently told Project Big Screen that he’d be willing to play Wolverine for as long as Marvel allows it. While the actor recently teased a possible appearance in Doomsday alongside Reynolds, his long-term future in the MCU remains uncertain. And with the studio having announced a new X-Men cast, fans are still waiting to learn who will take over the role of Wolverine.

Meanwhile, the character has been recast for the upcoming game, Marvel’s Wolverine, with another Australian actor following in the footsteps of Hugh Jackman. Liam McIntyre (Gears of War) provides the voice, likeness, and motion capture for the X-Men mutant in the new game.

Developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Marvel’s Wolverine is a brutal third-person action-adventure starring the superhero. Watch the trailer:

“As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes, unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination, to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be,” the official synopsis reads.

With Huge Claws Comes “Huge Responsibility”

Now that the game is nearing its release, McIntyre has begun appearing publicly to promote it.

“For me, I’ve liked Wolverine since I was a kid, like, 13, something like that, I was watching the animated series,” he told Back Pocket. “And then one day, many decades later, I get a call that I’ll have an audition the day I land in LA. The plane’s late, I miss the audition. They had another day the next day, they were like, ‘Look, we’ll just put you on the end of that.’ I remember doing it, and I was walking out, I was like, ‘And I’m also Australian if that’s a thing you need!'”

“I still don’t know what mad luck happened to get that role,” McIntyre added, “but now it’s a huge responsibility that I have to not screw up.” Watch the full interview:

Until Marvel Studios announces who will be taking up the mantle in the X-Men reboot, Liam McIntyre is our new Wolverine.

And while we wait to see the new X-Men cast on screen, Avengers: Doomsday brings back several mutants from the Fox films, including Ian McKellen’s Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, Alan Cumming’s Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn’s Raven Darkhölme/Mystique, James Marsden’s Scott Summers/Cyclops, Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier/Professor X (who also appeared in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), and Kelsey Grammer’s Hank McCoy/Beast (who had a cameo at the end of 2023’s The Marvels).

Channing Tatum, who debuted in Deadpool & Wolverine, is also back as Remy LeBeau/Gambit.

Avengers: Doomsday releases on December 18.

Marvel’s Wolverine releases on September 15.
