Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again is heading toward an unexpected ending, with the Disney+ revival set to conclude after its upcoming third season. The news comes at an especially notable moment for the series, as showrunner Dario Scardapane has also exited the production while Season 3 remains in post-production.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel did not renew Scardapane’s contract, bringing his time with the series to an end roughly two months after filming on the third season wrapped. The situation is particularly unusual because post-production is reportedly still underway, and it is currently unclear who will oversee the final stages of the season.
Season 3 is expected to premiere on Disney+ in 2027 and will now serve as the final chapter of Daredevil: Born Again. The decision brings an end to a series that has already experienced one of the most significant creative transformations in Marvel Television’s recent history.
Marvel’s Original Daredevil Revival Looked Very Different
When Marvel first announced Daredevil: Born Again, the project represented a major opportunity to bring one of Netflix’s most popular Marvel characters into the Disney+ era.
Charlie Cox returned as Matt Murdock, with Vincent D’Onofrio reprising his role as Wilson Fisk, better known as Kingpin. However, the version of Born Again initially being developed was reportedly considerably different from the Netflix series that preceded it.
The show was originally ordered for 18 episodes, with Matt Corman and Chris Ord serving as head writers. Rather than directly continuing the mythology established by Netflix’s Daredevil, the early version reportedly leaned into a more procedural approach.
That creative direction did not last.
After production had begun, Marvel reassessed the series. The 2023 Hollywood strikes provided an opportunity to pause and reconsider what had already been filmed, eventually resulting in Corman and Ord leaving the project. Marvel then brought in Scardapane, a writer and producer who had previously worked on Netflix’s The Punisher, to lead the overhaul.
The changes were substantial. Marvel brought in Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as directors, rewrote significant portions of the story, and filmed additional material, including a new pilot. Scardapane and his team ultimately worked to reconnect the series with the characters and mythology audiences remembered from Netflix’s Daredevil.
The Reset Changed Almost Everything
The overhaul also helped bring several familiar faces back into the story. Deborah Ann Woll returned as Karen Page, while Elden Henson returned as Foggy Nelson. Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle was also restored to the project after the actor had initially expressed reservations about the earlier version of the character. Bernthal later explained that the original incarnation did not feel like the Frank Castle he wanted to portray, but the creative reset gave him greater input into the character and ultimately convinced him to return.
Even some decisions that had already been made were reversed. Ayelet Zurer returned as Vanessa Fisk after initially being recast, further reinforcing Marvel’s attempt to position Born Again as a continuation of the Netflix story rather than an entirely separate reboot. The result was a very different series from the one Marvel had originally started producing.
Scardapane himself later described the extensive process involved in restructuring the show. His team rewrote numerous storylines, filmed three new episodes, and carried out additional production to incorporate the new material into what had already been shot.
Born Again Finally Found Its Way to Disney+
The revamped Daredevil: Born Again eventually debuted on Disney+ in 2025, bringing Cox and D’Onofrio back together while reconnecting the series with its Netflix predecessor.
The second season followed in 2026, expanding the world further and bringing additional familiar Marvel characters into the story. The series was initially positioned as something Marvel could continue producing on an annual basis, making the latest news particularly surprising. There were even plans that never survived the overhaul. Tom Hiddleston had reportedly been attached to direct an episode of the original version of Born Again, but those plans disappeared when Marvel fundamentally restructured the project.
Now, the series itself is facing its final restructuring.
Season 3 Will Be the Final Chapter
Season 3 has already completed filming and is now in post-production. That makes Scardapane’s departure particularly notable, as he is leaving after playing a central role in transforming Born Again into the series audiences eventually received.
Marvel has not publicly detailed who will oversee the remaining work on Season 3. The Hollywood Reporter has indicated that post-production is already in its final stages, but the identity of whoever will take the reins remains unclear. The third season will also have to follow a second season that left Matt Murdock’s story in a dramatically different position, setting the stage for one final confrontation with Fisk.
For now, Marvel has not indicated that the end of Daredevil: Born Again means the end of Daredevil within the wider MCU. Cox’s Matt Murdock has already appeared outside the series, while D’Onofrio’s Kingpin has similarly become an increasingly important part of Marvel’s street-level stories.
That distinction could become important as Marvel continues developing its wider universe. The Disney+ series may be ending, but that does not necessarily mean audiences have seen the last of its characters.
After everything Daredevil: Born Again went through to reach Disney+, however, the Man Without Fear now has one final season ahead of him. What began as an 18-episode Marvel reboot underwent a dramatic creative reset and ultimately reconnected itself with Netflix’s Daredevil, which will conclude with Season 3 in 2027.
