Michael Keaton’s return as Batman is just weeks away.

Michael Keaton’s Return to the Burton-Verse

Michael Keaton’s Batman has been a fan-favorite iteration since he first appeared in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989). However, after the sequel Batman Returns in 1992, Keaton exited the series, leaving a void that was filled by Val Kilmer and then George Clooney.

Recently, however, Keaton re-emerged as Bruce Wayne in the DCU Multiversal movie, The Flash (2023). His return was a nostalgic moment for many who grew up watching him fight crime in the cape and cowl. While the film received negative reviews and performed poorly at the box office, Keaton’s performance garnered plenty of fan appreciation.

Keaton isn’t set to reprise his role in any future projects, however, his iteration of Batman will return in a sequel that takes place within in the universe established by Tim Burton.

“Batman: Resurrection,” a brand-new novel written by Star Wars author John Jackson Miller, is set to expand the quasi-gothic world of the “Burton-Verse” while continuing the evolution of Keaton’s Caped Crusader in contemporary media.

“Batman: Resurrection”

“Batman: Resurrection” takes place between Batman (1989) and Batman Returns and grapples with the aftermath of chaos left by The Joker’s death. Gotham was not saved by Batman: it is scarred and in turmoil, facing new threats that echo The Joker’s chaotic legacy.

Along with Bruce Wayne/Batman himself, the novel introduces familiar characters from the films, including Alfred Pennyworth, Vicki Vale, Commissioner James Gordon, and Selina Kyle, who were played by Michael Gough, Kim Basinger, Pat Hingle, and Michelle Pfeiffer, respectively.

With Michael Keaton’s timeless portrayal of the Dark Knight at the forefront, “Batman: Resurrection” won’t just reintroduce fans to beloved Burton-Verse characters, but it will also shed some light on the complexities of their lives intertwined with Gotham City.

Recently, Polygon shared an excerpt from the book. And in an interview with DC Comics, John Jackson Miller answered several questions about what fans can expect from the sequel.

“It’s several months after the events at The Joker’s parade,” Miller explains. “This was a deliberate decision on my part, because there’s three years (or more) in between Batman and Batman Returns. As I have already found in my work in a galaxy far, far away, you can put a lot of stories into a period that size. This is one of them.”

“Batman: Resurrection” will be released on October 15. It’s now available to pre-order from Amazon, Penguin Random House, and Bookshop. It will also be available in audiobook format.

Robert Pattinson’s The Batman

While Robert Pattinson is set to reprise his role as the Dark Knight in The Batman — Part II, a sequel set in the same universe has been canceled. In addition to The Penguin, which is now streaming on HBO, another TV series would have focused on the Gotham City Police Department and Arkham Asylum.
