The Mickey Shorts Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is closing its doors on Saturday, and Walt Disney World Resort has been notably vague about when the beloved Echo Lake venue will reopen.

Walt Disney World Resort updated the official webpage for Vacation Fun — An Original Animated Short with Mickey & Minnie on Tuesday, confirming that the Mickey Shorts Theater will close on August 9, 2026. The resort offered a partial explanation — the venue is “planned to reopen later this year” — without attaching any specific date to that promise.
The reason for the closure becomes clear two days later. Starting August 11, the theater space will be repurposed as a pickup location for a Kermit the Frog-themed Annual Passholder magnet, a complimentary gift available through September 24 or while supplies last. Walt Disney World Resort is evidently using the August 9 and 10 window to transition the space from a working theater into a distribution operation.

What happens when the Muppets-themed magnet giveaway ends on September 24 hasn’t been addressed. Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t confirmed whether the Mickey Shorts Theater will reopen promptly at that point or remain closed for an additional period. It also hasn’t said whether Vacation Fun — which has been the film screening at the venue since 2020 — will continue as the featured short when the theater eventually returns to regular programming.
A Familiar Pattern at the Mickey Shorts Theater

The Mickey Shorts Theater has been through this before. It closed in April of this year and didn’t reopen until May after being pressed into service as a Star Wars merchandise distribution point for the May the Fourth celebrations at Walt Disney World Resort. A separate month-long closure in 2024 addressed ongoing issues with the theater doors.
The pattern of the venue being temporarily repurposed for special events and giveaways suggests this closure, like the others, is driven by logistics rather than anything more permanent — but guests hoping to catch the Mickey and Minnie animated short at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will need to wait until later in the year to do so.
