According to The Sun, filming on Season 3 of Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, has been paused while the show’s scripts undergo a rewrite. Now, per The Sun, the production has hit another wall, this time centered on concerns with the actual scripts.
A source close to the situation described the issue as far from minor. “There have been some questions asked over the writing and the storylines involved in the latest scripts,” the source explained. “It’s important that these issues are ironed out before the cast carry on filming, unfortunately it’s central to the show and can’t be ironed out in post-production.”
That final point stands out. Whatever the concerns are, they apparently run deep enough that the fix has to happen before cameras roll again, rather than something that could be smoothed over during editing later.
This Isn’t the First Time the Show Has Stalled
Wednesday has dealt with production delays before this. Season 2 filming was interrupted in 2023 because of the Hollywood writers’ strikes, a disruption that hit shows across the entire industry at the time. The series also lost actress Thora Birch during that same stretch, who exited due to a family illness. Her character, Tamara Novak, was ultimately written out of the show entirely.
Netflix hasn’t responded to requests for comment on the current delay, and there’s no official word yet on how long the rewrite process will take. With a release date reportedly targeted for sometime next year, this pause adds a real question mark to whether that timeline holds up.
Where Things Stood Before the Pause
Before this latest hiccup, Season 3 had been filming steadily near Dublin since February 2026. Jenna Ortega is back, joined by returning cast members Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán, along with a lineup of newcomers that includes Winona Ryder, Eva Green, Chris Sarandon, Noah Taylor, Oscar Morgan, and Kennedy Moyer.
Netflix still hasn’t confirmed an official premiere date, though outside reports have pointed to a possible late 2027 release. Whether that window remains realistic likely depends heavily on how quickly the script issues get resolved.

By Season 2, Xavier had disappeared from the story altogether, since actor Percy Hynes White didn’t return following online allegations from 2023 that he publicly denied. Netflix never officially linked his departure to those allegations, instead explaining his absence within the show by sending Xavier to Reichenbach Academy in Switzerland.
That left Tyler as the last real connection to Wednesday’s earlier romantic arc. Season 2 didn’t bring that relationship back into focus, but it didn’t fully erase the tension between the two either. Showrunner Alfred Gough has acknowledged something “unspoken” still lingers between them, adding that sparks continue whenever the characters share screen time.
Jenna Ortega’s Fingerprints Are All Over This Shift
None of this looks accidental. Ortega has spoken openly for years about her issues with the original love triangle, once saying the storyline “made no sense” for Wednesday as a character. She’s also discussed pushing back against creative decisions that felt inauthentic to who Wednesday is, and she later praised the choice to move away from a traditional love interest as the series leaned harder into horror.
Her voice carries even more weight now that she’s an executive producer starting with Season 2, giving her a genuine hand in shaping the show’s creative direction. Based on everything said publicly, a full romantic reunion between Wednesday and Tyler currently seems far less likely than it did back after Season 1 wrapped.
That said, their shared history probably won’t disappear entirely. Gough’s own comments suggest the writers still see value in that unresolved tension. But recognizing lingering chemistry and turning Tyler back into an actual boyfriend are two very different things, and the show appears to be steering clear of the second option.
