The future of Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) in Star Wars has been uncertain since the end of the sequel trilogy, but new rumors suggest her return could come in an unexpected place—Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter.

The sequels were financial juggernauts, each grossing over $1 billion worldwide, yet their legacy remains controversial. Many longtime fans criticized The Last Jedi (2017) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019) for muddled storytelling and inconsistent character arcs. Rey became one of the most debated figures, praised by some as a strong heroine but dismissed by others for being overpowered without meaningful obstacles.

Despite the backlash, Disney announced a film following Rey after the sequels. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, that project is set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, focusing on Rey as she rebuilds the Jedi Order. But with no release date or production timeline, attention has turned to other corners of the galaxy.

That’s where Starfighter comes in. Scheduled for release on May 28, 2027, the film is described by Disney as a standalone adventure taking place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. It stars Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray in undisclosed roles. But rumors suggest that Gosling is a non-Jedi character and that Gray is his young, Force-sensitive nephew.

According to The Hot Mic’s John Rocha (via ComicBook.com), “The main kid is Force-sensitive. His mom is being played, as we said, by Amy Adams. She seems to be a Jedi. Gosling is not a Jedi, but he’s helping his nephew escape two evil bad guys who are chasing him across the stars. He has a mission he’s on, given to him by Adams.”

However, Lucasfilm has not confirmed these details.

YouTube channel Echo Base Network also says there are even rumors Ridley could appear in the film, tying its story to the larger narrative of the Jedi’s return. If Gosling’s character is guiding the child to safety, it’s possible that Rey is on the other end of that journey, serving as the next step in the boy’s training.

Bringing Rey back in Starfighter could test audience reception before Disney commits fully to her standalone film — this could also explain why that project is currently in limbo.

Whether those rumors hold weight or not, Ridley’s Rey is far from forgotten. With The Mandalorian & Grogu releasing in May 2026 and Starfighter in May 2027, fans won’t have to wait long to see what direction Lucasfilm takes next.
