For most Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort fans, the vacation really starts the moment they land in Orlando. That’s why any change at Orlando International Airport (MCO) matters to theme park travelers. Whether it’s a smoother walk to the terminal, easier parking, or a new nonstop flight from overseas, the airport plays a huge role in how a Central Florida trip begins and ends. And right now, MCO is making some big moves.

During its latest board meeting, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) highlighted a long list of projects completed in fiscal year 2026, along with plans for additional upgrades in the years ahead. The improvements include expanded terminal space, new international routes, more family-friendly areas, better signage, and a major push to increase parking capacity. For the millions of visitors who travel to Orlando every year for the theme parks, these changes could make the trip a little less stressful from start to finish.

Here’s a closer look at what’s new at Orlando International Airport and what’s coming next.

A New Bridge Connecting the Train Station and Terminal C

One of the biggest improvements is the opening of a new enclosed pedestrian bridge connecting the Train Station to Terminal C. The bridge features moving walkways, making it easier for travelers arriving by rail to get to the terminal.

For anyone who has dragged luggage through a busy airport after a long trip, moving walkways are a welcome addition. It’s a small detail that can make a big difference, especially for families juggling suitcases, strollers, and tired kids.

Terminal C Gets a New Wing

Terminal C also welcomed a new wing serving Gates 250 through 254. The expansion adds more capacity to the terminal and gives Virgin Atlantic a new home at MCO.

More gates mean more room to handle the growing number of travelers passing through Orlando, which is good news during peak seasons like summer, holidays, and spring break, when the theme parks and the airport are at their busiest.

New Family Zones in Every Terminal

Families traveling through MCO now have access to three new Family Zones, one in each terminal. These dedicated spaces give children a place to play, read, and relax before their flights.

This is a great addition for families heading home from Walt Disney World or Universal. After days of walking through theme parks, having a calm spot where kids can unwind before boarding could make the trip home much easier for everyone.

Updated Signs Throughout the Airport

MCO has also updated signage throughout the airport, parking garages, and surrounding roadways. The new signs are designed to help travelers find their way around more easily.

For first-time visitors or anyone who only flies into Orlando once a year, clearer directions can save time and cut down on confusion, especially when you’re trying to find a rental car, a ride-share pickup, or the right terminal for your departing flight.

Parking Is Getting a Major Upgrade

Parking is one of the airport’s biggest areas of focus as it prepares for future growth. MCO is introducing a new Parking Guidance System in Terminal C, which will be activated in phases across all parking garages through mid-2027. The system is meant to make finding open parking spaces easier.

GOAA has also created dedicated employee parking areas to free up more spaces for travelers. On top of that, the airport has started planning two new parking garages that will eventually add about 8,000 public parking spaces.

For Florida residents and drive-in travelers who park at the airport before a trip, that’s a meaningful change. More spaces and a system that helps you find them quickly could take a lot of stress out of the start of a vacation.

The Beautiful Airports Program

A separate $40 million Beautiful Airports Program is bringing improvements to parking facilities, terminals, and other areas of the airport. The program focuses on appearance, safety, and overall functionality, helping MCO keep up with its growing number of travelers.

New International Flights to Tokyo and Madrid

International travelers have new reasons to fly into Orlando, too. ZIPAIR introduced nonstop passenger charter flights between Orlando and Tokyo, Japan. This marks the first passenger charter service between Florida and the Asia-Pacific region.

Iberia also launched nonstop flights between Orlando and Madrid, Spain, adding another direct connection to Europe.

These new routes could make it easier for international guests to visit Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and other Central Florida attractions without extra connections along the way.

Big Investments Behind the Scenes

Several major investments are also supporting the airport’s continued expansion:

  • A $50 million project from dnata
  • A $26 million redevelopment by Signature Aviation at MCO
  • A $40 million Sky Harbour campus at Orlando Executive Airport

GOAA CEO Lance Lyttle summed up the airport’s goals, saying, “We are undertaking an ambitious effort to redefine what it means to deliver a world-class airport experience.”

The Aviation Authority is also updating its Local Developing Business program and introducing a new Small Business program designed to expand opportunities for qualifying Florida businesses.

What This Means for Theme Park Travelers

Orlando continues to grow as one of the world’s top vacation destinations, and the airport is working to keep up. For travelers visiting Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and other area attractions, these upgrades could make the journey smoother in a lot of ways.

New family spaces give kids somewhere to relax. Better signs and a parking guidance system help you get where you’re going faster. More gates and new international flights open the door for more visitors. And the planned parking garages show MCO is preparing for an even busier future.

Your next Orlando vacation might start off a little easier than the last one, and that’s a win before you even reach the parks.
