In just over 24 hours, one of Walt Disney World’s most popular theme parks will stop belonging to the general public.

On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, a private company will take over Disney’s Hollywood Studios for an exclusive evening event. That means anyone who has spent the past few weeks or months planning a full day at the park needs to rethink their schedule tonight rather than discover the change at the turnstiles on the afternoon of October 20.

Here is everything guests need to know before the buyout begins.

Hollywood Studios Closes at 5 P.M. on October 20

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is scheduled to close to regular day guests at 5 p.m. on October 20. That is four hours earlier than the park’s usual 9 p.m. closing time. The morning and afternoon will run as normal. Early Theme Park Entry for eligible Disney Resort hotel guests begins at 8:30 a.m., with general admission opening at 9 a.m.

After 5 p.m., however, the park shifts from a public theme park to a private venue. Guests without an invitation to the evening event will be asked to make their way out. For anyone with tickets already in hand, that leaves an eight-hour window to cover a park that many visitors consider a full-day commitment on its own.

Who Is Buying Out the Park?

The early closure is tied to the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo 2026, a major technology conference that kicked off on October 19 at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin. The conference runs through October 22.

As part of the week’s programming, Gartner has arranged a private evening event at Hollywood Studios on the night of October 20. Conference attendees will have access to the park outside regular public operating hours, with the space reserved for them instead of ordinary day guests.

With attendees already arriving on the property and the conference now underway, the countdown to the takeover is very much on.

What the October 20 Closure Means for Day Guests

The most immediate impact is lost time. Guests heading to Hollywood Studios on October 20 will have four fewer hours than the park’s standard operating day.

That changes how a visit needs to be planned. Major attractions such as Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Slinky Dog Dash, and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror will need to be prioritized earlier in the day, and guests should expect the usual evening lull in wait times not to happen.

Nighttime entertainment is also off the table. Fantasmic! is not scheduled to run for regular day guests on the evening of October 20, which will disappoint anyone who had built their visit around the show. Guests with flexible plans still have time to adjust. Swapping Hollywood Studios for another Walt Disney World park on October 20, or moving their Hollywood Studios day to later in the week, could be the simpler option.

The shortened hours could also nudge crowds toward Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom of October 20, though how much of an effect that will have remains uncertain.

Not the First Time a Disney World Park Has Been Bought Out

Private events and corporate buyouts are nothing new at Walt Disney World. In fact, Gartner has done this before, hosting a comparable early-closure event at Hollywood Studios in October 2023.

One of the most memorable takeovers came in June 2024. On Wednesday, June 5, Hollywood Studios closed early so the entire park could be handed over to attendees of the SAP Sapphire & ASUG Annual Conference Orlando, which ran from June 3 to 5 at the Orange County Convention Center.

That night, guests on the inside got more than empty queues and late-night rides. Maroon 5 headlined the event, performing a private concert inside the park. For regular guests, though, the experience was much the same as the October 20 experience: the park opened at 9 a.m. as usual, then closed early to make way for the private crowd.

The SAP Sapphire event has since moved around the resort. EPCOT hosted attendees in 2025 with a Zac Brown Band concert, and Magic Kingdom took its turn in May 2026, with Dave Matthews Band closing out the conference.

October’s Shifting Schedules

October 20’s buyout falls in a month that is already busy with changes to park hours. Halloween events and other special occasions continue to affect when guests can access certain parks across Walt Disney World throughout October. The Gartner event is another reminder that published operating hours are not always set in stone, and that a valid park ticket does not necessarily guarantee access to a park for its full usual operating day.

What Can You Do if You’re Visiting Hollywood Studios

Arrive for Early Theme Park Entry at 8:30 a.m. if you are staying at an eligible Disney Resort hotel, or be at the gates for 9 a.m. general admission. Tackle Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Slinky Dog Dash, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, and Tower of Terror first, and plan to be heading for the exit before 5 p.m.

If Fantasmic! or an evening in Galaxy’s Edge was the highlight of your plans, consider moving your Hollywood Studios visit to another day this week and spending October 20 at a different park instead. Whatever you decide, check the official Walt Disney World park calendar and the My Disney Experience app before you leave in the morning, as hours and entertainment schedules can change at short notice.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
