Woman Arrested After Attempting To Kill Florida Governor Ron DeSantis; Disney Operations Begin Out of State

A Florida woman has been arrested for making online death threats against Governor Ron DeSantis, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) announced Tuesday. On July 8, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) alerted HCSO to threats made on the Governor’s website by Danyele Callaway, 20, from Riverview. The threats included a demand for an “immediate in-person” meeting and life-threatening statements, according to the HCSO.

Investigators revealed that Callaway has a history of interactions with law enforcement, including arrests for domestic violence-related charges and battery on public servants. She has also reportedly made verbal threats against Gov. DeSantis in the past. On Tuesday, shortly after 9:30 a.m., deputies responded to Callaway’s home for a mental health evaluation.

During this evaluation, she reportedly admitted to making the comments and was taken into custody. “The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate any threats, especially from individuals who think they can hide behind their keyboards to spread fear and harm,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “We will not accept a threat against anyone in our community, especially our Governor…”

“…Threatening the lives of those who serve our democratic institutions is an attack on the very principles of our society and justice system. While everyone is entitled to their opinions, no one has the right to endanger others’ lives. This case is a stark reminder that violent threats will not be tolerated. We will continue to pursue and hold accountable anyone who seeks to disrupt the peace and safety of our community.”

Callaway faces charges of written or electronic threats to kill or inflict bodily injury and is being held under the Baker Act. The investigation is ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office. DeSantis is gearing up to speak at the National Republican Convention, which will take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from July 15 through July 18. This will lead the governor to depart from the State, hopefully cooling off any others who hear of this news and attempt to commit the same crime, which is illegal in the highest caliber.

Disney has not announced plans to relocate significant attractions like Magic Kingdom Park. However, the broader distribution of its products and potential future expansions in other states may indicate a strategy to mitigate political risks in Florida. This approach allows Disney to maintain its commitment to growth and investment in its theme parks while navigating a complex and evolving legislative landscape.

With popular theme park-only items like its renowned Joffrey’s Coffee already being sold across state lines, it will only be a matter of time until the House of Mouse begins sending other operations outside of Florida. This diversification could potentially insulate Disney from economic and regulatory pressures specific to Florida, ensuring continued operational stability and flexibility. This approach allows Disney to maintain its commitment to growth and investment in its theme parks while navigating a complex and evolving legislative landscape.

Following an assassination attempt, Governor DeSantis’s and other public officials’ security would likely be significantly heightened. This could involve more protective measures, increased law enforcement presence, and possibly changes in how and where DeSantis conducts public appearances. An assassination attempt could lead to a surge in public sympathy and support for DeSantis.

Beyond Florida, such an event could have national implications, influencing the broader political climate, electoral strategies, and political discourse across the country. An assassination attempt can erode public trust and increase anxiety about political violence. Overall, an assassination attempt on Governor DeSantis would be a significant and traumatic event, with wide-ranging consequences for him, the State of Florida, and the national political landscape.

About Emmanuel Detres

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
