Welcome back, foolish mortals. If you have walked through Liberty Square at Walt Disney World recently, you have likely noticed that the iconic Haunted Mansion has been lurking behind themed construction walls. After months of anticipation, the wait is finally over. Disney Imagineers have unveiled the results of this extensive refurbishment, and it is a massive treat for theme park history buffs.

Instead of a modern reimagining, the beloved dark ride has received a breathtaking retro glow-up. The freshly revealed exterior dates back to the park’s opening day on October 1, 1971, restoring a high-contrast color scheme that had been lost for decades.

Here is a closer look at the Haunted Mansion’s newly resurrected facade and what Disney fans need to know about this spectacular refurbishment.

The Veils Drop in Liberty Square

Theme park refurbishments always require a bit of patience from guests. For the first half of 2026, the Haunted Mansion was entirely obscured by decorative scrims designed to mimic the building’s gothic architecture. While the ride remained mostly open to those wishing to visit the 999 happy haunts, the physical manor was hidden from view.

That all changed on the morning of July 30, 2026. While the attraction experienced a brief period of downtime early in the day, eagle-eyed guests quickly noticed that the front-facing scrims were completely gone. Today, only a small portion of scaffolding remains on the far side of the building, meaning the vast majority of the newly refreshed facade is fully visible.

Breaking Down the 1971 Transformation

For the past couple of decades—right up until the attraction went under wraps in 2025—the Haunted Mansion featured a highly uniform, even-toned exterior. The building had faded into a soft, monochromatic, weathered gray-brown. This latest refurbishment completely reverses that trend, bringing back the sharp architectural contrast of the early 1970s.

Here are the historically accurate details that have been restored:

  • The Vibrant Green Cupola Dome: The crowning jewel of the mansion is back to its original oxidized green finish. Over the attraction’s 55-year history, the dome’s color shifted dramatically—historical photos from 1983 show it painted a distinct bronze before fading into a muted gray in later years. The return of this vibrant green instantly draws the eye and restores the building’s classic silhouette.
  • Shadowy Brickwork: The house’s primary brickwork has been painted a noticeably darker, brooding shade. This deep foundation perfectly grounds the estate’s spooky aesthetic, making it look much more imposing.
  • Lighter Stone Elements: To create a striking juxtaposition against the dark bricks, the stone elements framing the windows, doorways, and corners have been painted a much lighter shade. This highlights the intricate details of the Hudson River Valley Gothic design, preventing them from getting lost in a single-tone wash.

Primed for Spooky Season

This massive visual overhaul is a brilliant piece of historic preservation. By bringing back the sharp contrast between the light stone and dark brick, the mansion looks dramatic and larger than life—just as Walt Disney World’s original Imagineers intended.

The timing is absolutely perfect. As August arrives, Magic Kingdom is gearing up for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. This high-contrast exterior will look phenomenal under the event’s signature purple-and-green fog lighting.

While construction crews wrap up the final touches on the far side of the building, the Ghost Host’s freshly spruced-up estate stands ready to welcome you. The outside may be looking better than ever, but remember—there is always room for one more inside.
