Space Mountain came to an abrupt halt and temporarily shut down at Disneyland Resort last week following an alleged derailment. Dozens of riders were escorted off the attraction, and one Disney Park guest caught the evacuation on video.

Space Mountain has been a mainstay at Disneyland Resort since its grand opening in May 1977, following the debut of the original version in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort by two years. Over nearly five decades, this indoor coaster has become an iconic part of Disney Park history, inspiring variations at Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Tokyo Disneyland. Tokyo Disney Resort is currently rebuilding its version of Space Mountain, while the other two parks have permanently transformed the attraction into Hyperspace Mountain, a Star Wars-themed adventure.

Though overlays like Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain have come and gone at Disneyland Resort, the ride has largely maintained its original theming. But last week, a surprising turn of events unfolded when a Disneyland Park guest claimed that one of Space Mountain’s ride vehicles “derailed,” sparking an evacuation of the ride.

Instagram user @dannymcduck_ posted this video after evacuating the intergalactic indoor coaster. The footage shows Disney cast members assisting riders as they exit their vehicles in a maintenance bay near the loading area.

The guest’s video and caption pointed to a “derailed” vehicle as the cause of the incident. Disneyland Resort briefly closed Space Mountain to manage the situation, but it seems that no injuries were sustained during the event.

True to form, Disneyland Resort did not release an official statement regarding the incident. Disney Tips was unable to confirm whether the reported derailment actually occurred or if the issue stemmed from another type of mechanical failure. Despite the temporary closure, Space Mountain has since reopened and was fully operational at the time of this article’s publication.
