A New Vision for Marvel’s Streaming Future
Marvel Studios is retooling one of its long-gestating Disney+ projects—this time, with fresh creative leadership and a firm eye on a 2026 release window.
First announced in 2022 as Vision Quest, the solo series centered on Paul Bettany’s synthezoid Avenger had largely slipped into obscurity. The show was originally developed by WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer and intended to pick up after the emotional finale of the Emmy-winning limited series. Bettany, who has portrayed Vision since Captain America: Civil War (2016), was attached to return.
But in a pivotal move last year, Marvel reassessed its approach and officially revived the Vision series with Star Trek: Picard’s Terry Matalas at the helm. Matalas brought acclaim for overseeing Picard’s final season, even earning a Writers Guild of America nomination for the finale, “The Last Generation.”
Now under Matalas’ stewardship, the newly reimagined Vision series is targeting a premiere on Disney+ in 2026.
“With Matalas coming on board, this will be Marvel’s first new live-action series pickup in almost two years, representing a significant shift in how the company produces television for Disney+,” Variety reported last year. “Originally, Marvel adopted a features model, hiring head writers to create predetermined (and, often, already announced) shows, but assigning most leadership responsibilities to the directors and creative executives.”
This shift marks a major turning point for Marvel Studios, steering away from the feature-film-style production model and moving toward more showrunner-led storytelling—an approach that has long been a staple in traditional TV.
Audiences last saw Vision in WandaVision’s finale, which saw Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) confronting grief and letting go of the conjured Vision she created in Westview. However, another version—White Vision, rebuilt by S.W.O.R.D.—emerged in that same episode. Initially dispatched to destroy Wanda, the character experienced a profound transformation after a confrontation with the other Vision, who restored his lost memories.
Now, the upcoming series will also bring back one of the MCU’s most formidable villains: James Spader’s Ultron. Also on board are Todd Stashwick, Ruaridh Mollica as Tucker, and, according to recent reports, T’Nia Miller as Marvel Comics character Jocasta.
In another twist, a supporting character from Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) will be returning—though in a very different form.
Per industry insider Daniel Richtman, E.D.I.T.H.—Tony Stark’s posthumous A.I. introduced in Far From Home—will appear in Vision not as a voice, but as a physical character. Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire is reportedly cast in the role, taking over from voice actor Dawn Michelle King.
“‘Human’ versions of several MCU androids and AIs have been cast, and according to insider Daniel Richtman, Emily Hampshire will play the physical manifestation of E.D.I.T.H,” reports Comic Book Movie. “He broke the news that T’Nia Miller will play Vision‘s Jocasta yesterday, with the trades confirming it a few hours later, so you shouldn’t dismiss this rumour.”
In the MCU timeline, E.D.I.T.H.—short for “Even Dead, I’m The Hero”—was Tony Stark’s final technological legacy, handed to Peter Parker (Tom Holland) after Tony’s death in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Packed into high-tech glasses, the system controlled a vast array of Stark drones and satellites. It played a crucial role in Far From Home’s plot, where Peter’s decision to hand control to Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) nearly led to disaster.
With White Vision still at large following his mysterious departure from Westview, the upcoming series is poised to explore that lingering narrative thread. It also marks Marvel’s first greenlit live-action series in almost two years—a potential cornerstone in a larger strategy shift for Disney+ content.
Following Agatha All Along and the Daredevil: Born Again revival, Vision seems poised to be a key part of Marvel’s evolving television playbook.
And for fans of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, there’s more on the way: the web-slinger will return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day in 2026.
