– ‘The Little Mermaid’ Vanishes From Magic Kingdom Operations at 7 PM

There is a corner of Magic Kingdom where the castle spires give way to rocky cliffs and a weathered shipwreck topped with a figurehead of a certain redheaded mermaid. That is the home of Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid, one of the gentlest and most charming rides in the park.

The attraction opened in 2012 as part of the New Fantasyland expansion. It retells Ariel’s story from the 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid, with songs and scenes fans know by heart.

Guests board clamshell-shaped Omnimover vehicles and drift through the whole tale, from Ariel’s grotto full of gadgets and gizmos to Ursula’s lair and a happily ever after. Sebastian leads a full-on underwater party along the way, and yes, you will be singing “Under the Sea” for the rest of the afternoon.

It is a ride that works for nearly everyone, which is exactly why a schedule change catches people’s attention. And this week, there is one to know about.

Ariel Clocks Out Early on November 5

Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid will close early at Magic Kingdom on Thursday, November 5. According to the ride’s page on the Walt Disney World website, it will operate from 9:00am to 7:00pm that day.

Magic Kingdom itself is still scheduled to stay open until 10:00pm. That means the clamshells stop boarding a full three hours before the rest of the park winds down.

Disney has not shared a reason for the shortened hours. As of now, there is no refurbishment scheduled for the attraction.

The good news is that guests still get most of a day with Ariel and friends.

If you are staying at an eligible Disney Resort hotel, the ride opens at 8:30am for Early Theme Park Entry. That gives you a 30-minute head start before Magic Kingdom opens to everyone else at 9:00am. From there, it runs as normal until 7:00pm.

There is no height requirement for Under the Sea, which makes it a great early pick for families with little ones. Knocking it out in the morning before Fantasyland fills up is a smart move on any day, and especially this one.

The guests who need to pay attention are the ones who like to save it for later. If your plan was an after-dinner ride or a nighttime trip under the sea, you will want to move it up. Anyone building a Lightning Lane plan for November 5 should also choose a return time well before 7:00pm.

Not the First Ripple This Year

This is the second brief schedule change for the ride in 2026. Back in February, Walt Disney World closed Under the Sea for a single day on February 11. That closure showed up on the operating calendar about a week ahead of time, and Disney never said what work was done.

The November 5 change follows a similar pattern. It was posted with roughly a week’s notice, and once again, no explanation came with it.

Frontierland Is Missing a Bayou, Too

If you are heading to Magic Kingdom this week, Ariel is not the only one on a different schedule. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure closed on November 2 for its first-ever refurbishment. The ride opened in 2024.

Walt Disney World’s calendar currently shows the flume ride returning on Friday, December 18. That would put it back in action right before the busy Christmas stretch. As always, refurbishment dates can shift, so check the official calendar before your visit.

A Few Tips Before You Dive In

A three-hour early close is not the end of the world, but it can throw off a carefully planned day. Here is how we would handle it.

  • Ride early. Use Early Theme Park Entry if you have it, or head to Fantasyland right at park opening.
  • Check your Lightning Lane times. Anything after 7:00pm for Under the Sea will not work on November 5.
  • Keep the app handy. Disney can adjust hours at any time, so look at My Disney Experience the morning of your visit.
  • Have a backup. If you miss the cutoff, there is still plenty of Fantasyland left to enjoy until the park closes at 10:00pm.

We will keep watching the calendar for any more changes to the ride.

Now we want to hear from you. Are you a morning rider or an after-dark Ariel fan? And be honest, how many times do you sing along with Sebastian on the way through? Tell us in the comments. If you are in the park on November 5, let us know how your day went, too. For now, you still have a few hours to enjoy the attraction, and if you miss it, you can always go back and visit the park on November 6 and ride the attraction then! Now, let’s all head under the sea together.
