The Mandalorian and Grogu Make Immediate Return To ‘Star Wars’ Following Box-Office Flop
While The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026) became the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film after earning just $345 million worldwide on a reported budget of $165 million, it seems Disney and Lucasfilm are anything but done with the bounty hunter and his Force-wielding companion.
The film, which is a continuation of the Disney+ series, also received mixed reviews from audiences and critics. But sidelining highly lucrative characters like Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu would make very little sense. Not only do they remain popular among Star Wars fans, but the Disney+ series The Mandalorian (2019) remains one of the franchise’s biggest successes.

With that said, the pair’s future on screen, whether that’s streaming or theatrical, is unknown. The Mandalorian Season 4 has also reportedly been scrapped — which is hardly surprising given Season 3’s divisive reception in 2023.
Still, since the film’s release in May, Din and Grogu have already returned across numerous Star Wars projects, including games, comic books, and the Disney+ special LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian (2026). As such, Star Wars fans will just have to get used to seeing the pair on new adventures in other mediums of storytelling — luckily, the franchise is never lacking in that area.
The Mandalorian and Grogu already appeared in an official new comic book titled Danger in the Dark from writer Delilah S. Dawson and illustrator Alessandro Ranaldi earlier this year. Now, the official follow-up, The Mandalorian and Grogu: Nightmare on Nevarro, has been released.
From Mad Cave Studios and its young readers imprint Papercutz, working with Lucasfilm Publishing, Nightmare on Nevarro is a “spooky” one-shot set inside the Lava Tubes of the titular planet, taking place between The Mandalorian Season 3 and The Mandalorian & Grogu.
The official synopsis reads: “Sinister creatures with glowing red eyes are terrorizing the people of Nevarro, and it’s up to the Mandalorian Din Djarin and his foundling Grogu to put an end to the haunting! Once again, the pair venture into the belly of Nevarro’s magma-filled lava tubes to uncover the truth.”
Mad Cave Studios took to X (Twitter) on October 21 to announce the comic’s release while revealing some of the artwork.

Where To Watch The Mandalorian & Grogu
The Mandalorian & Grogu is now streaming on Disney+.
“The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy,” StarWars.com‘s official synopsis for the film reads. “As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.”
Directed by Jon Favreau and written by Dave Filoni, Noah Kloor, and Favreau, the film stars Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin), Sigourney Weaver (Colonel Ward), and Jeremy Allen White (Rotta the Hutt).
What’s the Next Star Wars Film?
Disney and Lucasfilm are preparing the franchise’s next theatrical release, Star Wars: Starfighter (2027), which arrives on May 28, 2027. Directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) and written by Jonathan Tropper, it stars Ryan Gosling as the film’s lead protagonist.
According to StarWars.com, the upcoming film takes place five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker (2019) and is described as “an all-new standalone adventure” and “an entirely original story set in a period of time never before explored in Star Wars.”
