Tom Holland has opened up about the conditions of his Marvel Cinematic Universe exit.
Holland first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War (2016), becoming the third live-action Spider-Man and the first version of Peter Parker fully integrated into the MCU. His character quickly formed a mentor-protégé relationship with Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark, with Peter ultimately serving as the latter’s motivation to change history in Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Across six MCU films, Holland’s Spider-Man evolved from an eager teenager into an independent hero. That arc culminated in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), which ended with Peter sacrificing his personal life after Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) wiped everyone’s memory of his true identity.
Soon, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will see Peter Parker navigate life after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home(2021), with Marvel positioning the film as a fresh start for the character. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, it is expected to focus on a more grounded, street-level Spider-Man, with Marvel boss Kevin Feige describing it as a more “classic” take on the character.
But with a new chapter about to begin for Peter Parker, questions are already turning to how Holland’s tenure as Spider-Man might eventually come to an end. The actor recently addressed that possibility, outlining the circumstances under which he believes he should leave the role behind.

Tom Holland Reveals How He Will Leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe
In an interview with Empire, Holland revealed that he would like his character to mentor a new version of Spider-Man before he exits the franchise.
“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” he said. “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”

Sad though some fans will likely be to hear that Holland is contemplating the end of his Marvel run, the good news is that this implies there’s still more to come from the character after Brand New Day.
That uncertainty is a far cry from the situation Holland found himself in just a few years ago. In 2019, negotiations between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures – which owns Spider-Man’s film and live-action television rights – temporarily broke down, raising the prospect of the webslinger leaving the MCU entirely before the two studios reached a new agreement.
Spider-Man remains one of Marvel’s most valuable properties, ranking second after The Avengers. Spider-Man: No Way Home alone took home more than $1.9 billion at the box office.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026. The film is set four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and will see Holland star alongside real-life partner Zendaya (MJ), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle/Punisher), Michael Mando (Mac Gargan/Scorpion), and Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk).
Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is also set to make her Marvel debut in an undisclosed role. Rumors have linked her to everyone from Jean Grey to Screwball.
