Universal Orlando Resort guests planning a visit over the next several months may want to revisit their must-do attraction lists.
Several closures are affecting Universal Islands of Adventure, and additional shutdowns are already scheduled as the resort prepares for another busy year. While some attractions will temporarily close for maintenance, others are disappearing permanently as Universal continues reshaping its theme parks.
Now, one of the park’s biggest attractions is facing an even longer closure than originally expected, with its anticipated reopening pushed back several weeks.
Here’s what guests should know about four major closures affecting Islands of Adventure through 2026 and into 2027.
The Lost Continent Continues Disappearing
One of Islands of Adventure’s original themed lands is gradually disappearing, marking the end of an era.
The Lost Continent opened in 1999, transporting visitors into a world of ancient mythology, mysterious ruins, and elaborate architecture.
However, Universal has spent years removing the land’s attractions and entertainment.
Poseidon’s Fury permanently closed in May 2023, ending its walkthrough adventure featuring special effects and ancient gods. Other longtime locations, including The Mystic Fountain and the Treasures of Poseidon shop, have also closed.
Now, Universal is moving forward with a phased permanent closure throughout 2026 and 2027. The remaining portions of The Lost Continent are being removed as Universal prepares for future experiences. Unlike a refurbishment, these closures are permanent, and guests shouldn’t expect the former attractions to return.
Universal hasn’t revealed complete replacement plans, leaving fans wondering what’s next.

Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges Closing
Another Islands of Adventure attraction will temporarily close shortly after the holiday season concludes.
Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges, located in Toon Lagoon, is scheduled to close on January 4, 2027, with its refurbishment running through February 2, 2027.
The popular water ride takes guests aboard circular rafts through a series of rapids, waterfalls, and unexpected soaking opportunities.
It’s one of the park’s wettest attractions, making it especially popular during Florida’s warmer months.
However, water rides frequently require maintenance, particularly after months of continuous operation.
The January shutdown falls during a traditionally cooler period in Central Florida, when fewer guests may be interested in getting completely soaked.
Universal hasn’t announced any major changes to the attraction’s storyline or ride experience.
For now, the closure appears to be a temporary maintenance period rather than a significant overhaul. Guests visiting during those dates should plan accordingly, especially if Toon Lagoon is normally part of their Islands of Adventure itinerary.

A Harry Potter Attraction Will Go Offline
Before Popeye’s January refurbishment begins, another major Universal Orlando experience will temporarily become unavailable.
Hogwarts Express is scheduled to close on November 4, 2026, and reopen the next day on November 5, 2026. This will impact transportation between the resort’s two Wizarding World of Harry Potter locations.
Unlike most Islands of Adventure attractions, Hogwarts Express operates between two separate theme parks.
Guests board the train at Hogsmeade Station in Islands of Adventure or King’s Cross Station in Universal Studios Florida.
The journey features themed windows, familiar characters, and different experiences depending on the direction of travel.
However, once the train closes, guests can no longer travel directly between the two Wizarding World locations via the attraction.
Visitors hoping to experience both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley will need to walk between the parks using their regular entrances. That makes the closure particularly important for families planning to explore both areas in a single day.
Universal has not announced any major ride changes related to the November shutdown, and guests should check the official operating calendar for updated reopening information.

Jurassic Park River Adventure Reopening Delayed Until December
One of Islands of Adventure’s most recognizable attractions is facing an extended closure.
Jurassic Park River Adventure has remained closed since January 5, 2026, for an extensive refurbishment.
The attraction was originally scheduled to reopen on November 20, 2026, just before Thanksgiving.
However, that timeline has changed.
Universal’s updated schedule now lists December 16, 2026, as the reopening date, extending the closure by nearly four weeks.
Guests visiting during Thanksgiving and early December shouldn’t expect to experience the ride.
Jurassic Park River Adventure has been an Islands of Adventure staple since the park opened in 1999.
The attraction combines a peaceful boat journey through a dinosaur habitat with a chaotic escape sequence that culminates in a dramatic plunge.
Universal hasn’t detailed every improvement involved in the refurbishment, but the extended closure represents significant downtime for the longtime attraction.

What These Closures Mean for Universal Orlando Guests
With permanent removals, scheduled maintenance, and an extended refurbishment affecting Islands of Adventure, visitors should pay close attention to attraction calendars before arriving, especially during the busy holiday season.
Not every closure will happen simultaneously, but the changes could affect vacation plans throughout the coming months, particularly for returning visitors.
For now, December 16 remains the updated reopening date for Jurassic Park River Adventure, while additional closures will carry into 2027.
Universal Orlando continues investing in its theme parks, but guests may have to navigate a few unavailable favorites along the way.
